Political strategist Karl Rove Wednesday said recent polls show President Barack Obama in "desperate shape" in some key states he carried in 2008 and urged Republicans not to be discouraged by polls suggesting Mitt Romney has been wounded too severely by campaign missteps to recover.
"The swing state poll shows the president in desperate shape in territory he carried with ease in 2008," Rove said told Fox News' Neil Cavuto Wednesday evening, referring to a recent USA Today/Gallup poll showing Obama up by 48 percent to 46 percent over Romney.
Rove, a Fox News contributor and the founder of the Republican super PAC Crossroad GPS, said a closer look at the poll, however, indicates trouble ahead for the president in many of the 11 key battleground states when compared to a similar poll from the 2008 presidential race.
Rove noted that Obama was ahead of Sen. John McCain then with 55 percent of likely voters...in mid-September of that campaign.
"So Mitt Romney is already running ahead of the pace of John McCain. And President Obama is running . . . over six points behind where he did in these states in 2008,"
"if I were in the White House and looking at this."
Rove said polls...a false scientific precision ...
As an example, Rove pointed to the 1980 Reagan-Carter campaign, noting that Ronald Reagan was down significantly in the polls ...
He said that election was similar to the one playing out now between Obama and Romney.
"People were saying, 'You know what, this guy [Carter] is so bad. We have got double-digit inflation, double-digit unemployment, we got double-digit interest rates. . . Why is Ronald Reagan losing to Jimmy Carter?'" Rove said, adding: "Everyone said, 'Oh my God, we are going to lose. And, of course, we didn't."

Rove put all his money on Romney to begin with. He was key to his victory in the primary so he needs Romney to win now.
I agree. I’ll add more: Rove is a despicable insider. His comments about Akin were beyond the pale.
That said, he does know polling and how to read them.
“Of course they’ll vote Republican, where else are they gonna go?”
Which do you think is more important to Rove?, his agenda with MR or being honest to FNC viewers?
Listen but be skeptical of anything he says. He has all his money on Romney and if Romney loses the bullseye will be on him.
I’m sure Toyko Rove will do everything he can to help the One close the gap.
“Listen but be skeptical of anything he says.”
Yeah, I kinda feel the same way about Dick Morris.
Heard on radio today that Obama up big in three swing states (not the big ones). I'm sure when I look the poll up, it will be either just registered voters, or D+7 or both.
Rasmussen is the only one you can trust; and even his day today polls are not useful, really have to look at the trends.
Debates are going to be big. Romney should have the edge - more practice and more ammo to throw at Obama. Hopefully he comes out guns blazing (whoops, can say that)... I mean, very aggressively. Don't want a visit for hanging a chair.
“The key is that we get out and vote. It will be all about turnout”.
...correct. And I firmly believe that conservatives will turn out in record numbers. The polls, pundits, negative ads and intimidation won’t work to keep us home.
My prediction: the debates will be vanilla for the masses.
Willard only comes out fangs bared against conservatives. The Kenyan is a fellow traveler. Especially since the mods are hand-picked by the Left, even if Willard fought the fight of his life, he’s set up to lose.
Now him I dont even listen to. I wouldnt trust ANYTHING he says. Notice how well he and Hannity get along?
The only show on FNC I like anymore is Cavuto's Your World and I still really enjoy it.
Glenn Beck had some really good shows and some bad ones too but I cant stand 5 minutes of The Five. One hour of those threes irrelevent opinions? (Dana Per-RINO being the most irrelevent) Who watches that boring pointless show?
Correction :”..those five’s irrelevent opinions?”
That is why they call it ‘The five’, and it is on at 5pm EST.
Desperate shape in North Carolina and Indiana maybe, but he seems to be winning the rest of the states he won. It isn’t over by any means, but Mitt needs to do very well in the debates.
The Five is the worst hour of TV that Fox has ever broadcast. I agree with you. Nor do I care much for Red Eye, but at least it is trying to appeal to young, yuppie, something like that.
The Five is a totally unfocused, irrelevant “round the horn”, and that incomprehensible due to almost continual talking over top of each other...sometimes with 5 voices all at once.
If they can’t bring back Beck at least bring back relevance.
Ohio and Florida too close to call, within the MOE.
Virginia is still up in the air.
Wisconsin is an actual possibility with a favorite son as the VP candidate.
Michigan could fall to Romney, the son of a former governor.
Yes on all counts. Let’s pray Rove is right. Obamacare and the Supreme Court are at the top of the list.
One thing about Ohio - this time, they probably won’t have 100,000 non-residents voting early like they did in 2008. Jennifer Bruner, commie bee-yotch and Obambi supporter, is no longer in office there!
I’m convinced that voter fraud gave Ohio to Obama in 08.
Exactly. And I really dont care what their opinions are anyway. How are they experts on anything? Per-RINO tells us how GWB handled things back then, now there is useless trivia.
Dana Perino, NO
Bob Beckel, NO
Eric Bolling, OK on Cavuto, boring on this show
Juan Williams, NO
Kimberly Guilfoyle,NO
Greg Gutfeld, NO
Andrea Tantaros, NO
Cavuto is good because he interviews different Dems and Republicans, many in congress, and he is funny and I like his last 3 minute comments/editorial of the day, which Matthews recently started copying.
Brett Baur news at 6pm (EST) isnt bad either. I never could watch the gay guy at 7pm. boring
