President Barack Obama said Thursday that extremists used an anti-Islam video as an excuse to assault U.S. interests overseas, including an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
The president's comments came as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton faced questions from members of the House and Senate about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi in a series of closed-door classified briefings on Capitol Hill.
Republicans have accused the Obama administration of misreading the assault as the outgrowth of widespread demonstrations in the Middle East over the video. They insisted it was a terrorist attack, a term White House spokesman Jay Carney used on Thursday. Obama did not use the phrase.
"What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests," the president said at a candidate forum on the Spanish-language network Univision.
Asked if that meant al-Qaida, Obama said, "We don't know yet."
"We will focus narrowly and forcefully on groups like al-Qaida, the ones that carried out the 9/11 attacks. Those forces have not gone away," the president said.
Clinton also announced that, in line with federal law, she will appoint an independent panel to look at circumstances of the attack in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and there other employees. The so-called Accountability Review Board will be chaired by retired diplomat Thomas Pickering, she said.
Democrats and Republicans emerging from the briefings provided some details about what the administration is still piecing together - who was responsible, how much of it was planned and what was the security.

White House radicals used a video posted at Youtube as an excuse, throwing up doubts about the first amendment in order to deflect blame for being caught flat-footed with the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya – even denying it was a terror attack for 10 days. They also cast aspersions onto Mitt Romney, his Republican challenger for decrying their lack of an immediate response to the murder of the US Ambassador and three others- especially an apology issued from the embassy in Cairo after it was also besieged.
In the last ten days we have seen heavy pressure put to bear against anyone involved in the making of the “Innocence of Muslims”, a 14-minute trailer of which appears on the website. The Joint Chiefs of Staff even called one of those thought to be involved to pressure him to remove it. Celebrities and others have called for the filmmakers to be arrested or even charged with murder. Much of the liberal media in the United States sided with the administration against the film.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, said the filmmakers had abused their freedom of expression while Egypt issued arrest warrants for 8 people thought to be involved. The Obama administration also ran paid television ads in Pakistan apologizing for the “offensive” video.
A unified front against free speech has been waged for more than a week for the sole purpose of giving President Barack Obama a scapegoat to distract the public from his foreign policy failures, including having little-if any- security at the consulate in Libya.
The most frightening aspect of this is that while the President knew this was all political cover, most of those who took his side actually mean it. The “liberal” side in American politics are more than willing to void the greatest freedoms this country has, for some political points.

And the pResident used the same video as an excuse to spend $70k to air an ad on a bunch of paki-stun media stations in order to bow and apologize so as to rile up extremists even more - he WANTS an inflamed mudslim caliphate world.

I do believe these folks are sensing a Jimmy Carter moment. The summer of 1979 was pretty rough as well. It’s as though they want the United States to get tough. They do not respect Barry Hussein at all.

Fast & Furious 1.0: Release a lot of guns where criminals can get them. Same guns are used to kill a lot of people. Use as an excuse to do away with the 2nd Amendment.
Fast & Furious 2.0: Give weapons to “rebels” to bring down a government. “Rebels” then use them to attack our consulate and kill our Ambassador. Release poorly made video and claim it was the reason for the “attack.” Go after 1st Amendment because free speech causes riots. Video can also be used as a cover-up for a) incompetence and/or b) deliberately allowing consulate to be attacked. So they have a “2-fer.”
You know, the more info that comes out on this the more that makes sense. It explains where that boneheaded strategy came from too. The Won person that could make it all happen.
