During the winter, I had a lady, with tears in her eyes, ask me for money outside a supermarket. She was hungry and just wanted food for the night. Aw. About a half hour later, she was in the market, with a cart filled with meats and other goodies and then...took out her cell phone and among the things I heard was “The EBT card covers that.”

The day before yesterday I was at the grocery store, in the checkout line behind a healthy 20-something guy who had a cart loaded with cases of beer and pork spareribs. The total was $139 something, and he whipped out an EBT card to pay for it. The cashier declined it, saying the amount exceeded the card's limit. So he put away the card, set aside a couple of items, and paid for the rest ($98) with a $100 bill.
