Procedures for when you believe you have a counterfiet bill, directly from the US Secret Service Website

If You Receive a Counterfeit

Do not return it to the passer.

Delay the passer if possible.

Observe the passer's description, as well as that of any companions, and the license plate numbers of any vehicles used.

Contact your local police department or United States Secret Service field office. These numbers can be found on the inside front page of your local telephone directory.

Write your initials and the date in the white border areas of the suspect note.

Limit the handling of the note. Carefully place it in a protective covering, such as an envelope.

Surrender the note or coin only to a properly identified police officer or a U.S. Secret Service special agent.

No where does it say, rip bill in half and act like a jackass.

Yes sir. I’m going to rush to do what the Secret Service tells me to do.

That’s EXACTLY the training I received back when I worked retail. It was store policy as per Loss Prevention (this was at Sears, back in the good old days).

Do not return it to the passer.

I wonder if that means to complete the transaction because you'll be in a heap~o~trouble if you confiscate the customer's property and aren't an officer.

And then what? Does the Secret Service give you a genuine bill in return — or are you just out-of-pocket?

Stupid advice. First, who is going bother to call the Secret Service? Local police? They'll yawn. Just take it to a bank and they'll handle all of that for you.
