Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said on Thursday that if elected, he will ensure North American energy independence by 2020 by pursuing a sharp increase in production of oil and natural gas on federal lands and off the U.S. East Coast.

Sounds like a plan. I’m down for it.
And you’ll save a fortune by cutting off foreign aid to every country who doesn’t support American. Leave them to take care of themselves. Savages.
I thought the same as soon as the middle east embassy attacks started. This initiative would resonate even with dumbed-down Americans.
Exactly, US Energy Independence is a national security issue. Romney should follow this up by announcing he will authorize the building of the Keystone pipeline on his first day in office.
I can sum up my thoughts on that in two words, duh!
Drill here, drill NOW!!!
Couldn't agree more...
................U.S. economic vulnerability to volatile oil markets stems from the volume of oil we consume, not the volume we import,” said Levi, an energy and climate fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. “If you don’t change the volume of oil we consume, you’ve missed most of the problem.”........................
Hey A-HOLE! If the US gets off the world market grid, and lets the rest of the world duke out the price it’s willing to pay - without participation by the biggest world consumer, the US - then what do you you think will happen to prices given maybe 60% of current demand??
And if we don’t like the world market price, we’ll just speed up the pumps, and allow North American producers/refiners to participate in a closed market - just for us!
(However, that being said, I’ve always thought that the country that has the last barrels of oil, could rule the future of the earth, even though all the countries that pumped their oil for us are very rich, but have already tapped out their future.)
That’s great and all, but the numbers don’t add up, especially by 2020. That’s only seven years away. Can we reduce foreign energy dependence? Absolutely. But we will not be totally independent in our lifetimes, now matter whose policy we follow. Sorry for the cold water, but I’m realistic to a fault.
And do not leave out coal. In fact, boot the EPA, cut them down to size, eliminate their law making power, so all forms of energy can make us economically secure and give us national security.
Couldn’t agree more! I’ve been saying for months that if the R candidate would promise to lay out a Kennedy-Man-on-the-Moon national plan for energy independence, he or she would win in a landslide. (I was hoping it would be Gov. Palin who put such a plan forward).
Romney can not lose by doing this. He knows its the right thing for the country, people are getting hammered at the gas pumps, the mideast is on fire, and Obama will never do it because he likes having people poor and subservient to the gummint.
Biggest no brainer ever!
I heard today (with surprise) that we produce 40% of our own oil. Is that true??
Thanks bossbobcef.
Not only is it a plan, it’s a great plan whose benefits will ripple, not trickle, throughout our society and at the same time do a number on our enemies.

If You Live in a Blue State, Here Is What You Can Do To Help Romney Beat Obama
bump!!
Will you settle for 75% independent by 2020? However, IMO I think it can be accomplished if done on a crash basis and with sufficient incentives.
This could/should be Romney’s equivalent to the Kennedy pledge for US to go to the moon.
