N. Korean fishing boats retreat after violating West Sea border

2012-09-12 20:20

Seven North Korean fishing boats crossed the tense western maritime border with South Korea twice on Wednesday, but moved back into the North’s waters after a South Korean naval boat broadcast warning messages, military officials said.

The North Korean fishing boats sailed 1.5 kilometers into the South’s waters around 7:30 a.m., but retreated after South Korean patrol boats broadcast a warning, officials at Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

At the time, a North Korean government boat also briefly crossed the de facto sea border trying to escort the fishing boats back onto the North’s side of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea, JCS officials said. No skirmish erupted.

About two hours later, seven North Korean fishing boats again sailed 2.2 kilometers into the South’s waters, but moved back to the North’s waters after warning messages from South Korean naval boats, JCS officials said.

“After our patrol boat ordered them to retreat, the North Korean fishing boats returned to the northern side of the NLL,” a JCS official said on the condition of anonymity.

“Given the circumstances, they sailed into the South’s waters for fishing,” the official said. (Yonhap News)

According to the latest report by S. Korea's Chosun Ilbo, the after-incident analysis by SK military showed that NK military was prepared to launch attack if SK navy would confront the boats.

Their dug-in shore artillery opened the cover, ready for firing and their ships were either at sea or ready to move out, poised to respond. All indication is that they sent out their fishing boats as baits and if SK navy came out to confront them, they would attack SK navy. In short, this was a deliberately planned action to create military provocation. Kim Jong-eun exhorted to his troops to crush S. Korean military if needed, when he toured military units in this area. I think they will try again, this time with their more aggressive move. They are itching for another fight, probably because this is a way to deal with fluid domestic political situation.

In light of latest troubles from Mid-East, China and now N. Korea, I can only say:

Happy October, Obama!

Possible. It may depend on whether the Middle East situation intensifies or fails to die down over the weekend.

Norks’ basic infrastructure collapsed. They don't have enough resources to cope with natural disasters if its severity is above average. They took the beating in the last Typhoon. If the new ones pass through NK again, NK regime has a serious problem at their hands. Typhoon aftermath could be another crisis they have to deal with.

Replay of an old movie. Piss off America at your peril. Yes, we can fight a war in Europe, Africa, and Asia at the same time, and build our home economy.

What part of WWII did they miss?

Yep, the Norks were trying to bait the south into getting another ship sunk. ggrrr. The south should not take these kinds of provocations lightly.

Always have to look out for simultaneous two-front international crisis from now on: One in Mid-East, and the other one in East Asia.

If NK is hard hit by a typhoon the damage to infrastructure is likely to be in the tens of tens of dollars.

Another standoff at Panmunjom:

Visting Korean War veterans and a NK guard, taking pictures of each other.

50 years from now, the NK guard would find out that the faded photos from his days of service at Panmunjom are found in the attic of some U.S. home, and up for sale at ebay.:-)

Path looks to go straight up thru Seoul, I would guess lots of flooding which the North would not handle well.
