A violent super typhoon in the North Indian Ocean, named "Sanba" has begun to pick up steam and could start to affect residents of Japan and South Korea as early as Saturday morning.
Winds have climbed up to 178 mph, which would make it the equivalent of powerful category 5 Hurricane, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
One resident said gusts were nearing 222 mph.
Sanba is currently being tracked traveling north, and if it continues onwards, it could be headed on a collision course with Okinawa, Japan.
The island has a population of 1.3 million.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Eric Wanenchak said "it will be a life-threatening situation for the Ryukyu Islands of Japan with winds in excess of 100 mph. The worst case scenario for Okinawa is winds of 120-140 mph."
Only one typhoon in the past 10 years has had a lower pressure drop than Sanba, according to AccuWeather.

North Indian Ocean? Looks like the Pacific to me.
That is a monster of a storm. Hoping for the best for all in the path. At that windspeed and current path, I feel also for the people of North Korea..I’m afraid their current government won’t even let them know it is coming..
Maximum wave height 53 feet! Wow!
I'm guessing this is a mistake. I think they meant North Pacific Ocean. That is what the diagram shows.

North Indian Ocean???? Seems to me that it has been headed northwest within the Pacific Ocean!
Good luck everyone!
Looks like it’s going to miss Japan, but those things are just barely predictable.
Weather Underground says the storm has weakened to 145 MPH, still a strong storm though.
IIRC the easternmost section of the Indian Ocean is a good deal west of the Korean Peninsula. One thing that just occurred to me is that if it hits *North* Korea with 170mph winds it will *destroy* the few signs of modern civilization they now have.If it's as bad as predicted this could be very,*very* bad.
Coming directly over us here in Kyushu .
Wowzers!!! Thats dam near the strength of a tornado the size of a typhoon.
That tidal surge will be worse than a tsunami.
Stay Safe My Friend.
I'm in 'hurricane alley' and I know your situation
I was on Okinawa for a Super Typhoon in 1980. The thing lasted three full days.
Oh, man. This is gonna be a bad one. The worst thing I have to worry about is snow and ice during the month of January.
Well, my thoughts and prayers with any Freepers in the part of the world. Stay safe.
This is the second huge typhoon for them in a few weeks time.
Luckily, most of the housing is built to withstand these big storms.
I miss that place.
Prayers being said for you folks. Stay dry!!
