The closure of the Canadian embassy in Tehran was probably a precaution due to a potential Israeli air strike. This event was probably unrelated to the wide protests.
Since the probability was, and is, high that the Israeli’s will start a war with Iran in the next two months, they probably thought it prudent to bug out prior to 9/11.
The best speculation I have heard on this forum is that Israel will strike Iran before the U.S. elections unless they are convinced that Obama will lose. They believe that the election would tie Obama’s hands and keep him from interfering.
They would much prefer to deal with a Romney than an Obama in his second term. A second term Obama could very well initiate military action against Israel.
I remember that! It scrolled across the bottom of Fox news, and I thought, why is Canada doing that now - are they nervous about Israel and Netanyahu and the threats that Israel might try a preemptive strike on Iran if Obozo gets elected again?
Seems like they got the intelligence that a mess was coming on and they took care of business.
Obama, OTOH, either was too buzy skipping intelligence meetings or - please God I hope I am wrong on this - he decided global uprisings might help his election.
Another factor in play here, not widely publicized, has been the growing body of evidence, much of it from Iranian expats living here, that the Iranian embassy here was a clearinghouse for espionage, sedition and harassment of Iranian dissidents living here. Our intel service has publicly recommended that it be shut down.

I think you are correct.
The Harper government has turned into a staunch supporter of Israel. Israel has thanked Canada publicly for its support. Privately, they are probably sharing Islamic threat info with Canada and giving forewarning about any coming attack against Iran.
