a “-studies” degree today is worth what a high school diploma was worth 40 years ago.

Not true.

40 years ago you could get a job with a high school diploma.

Very, very true. Attended high school is a small rural community in Kansas. Only 2 of my classmates went on to college right out of high school - one to be a dentist, the other a doctor. Most of the rest of us went but in the evenings and weekends because we had great full-time jobs during the workday. We actually learned how to do something useful in our classes.

Employers also didn’t require drug tests or ask if we had had a felony. So much has changed in addition to the curriculum and educational standards.
