I believe that he is all appearance, as you say, with no center and therefore he must absorb from those around him in order to be of any substance at all.

Yep, and it is interesting to hear him when he tries to relate to us peons, and pretend to have feelings, but we know that he has absolutely no feeling at all for others.

I once, innocently, had a run in with a sociopath and I was quite puzzled how the person could be so cold, heartless and non-caring. It was like staring into an abyss of nothing. The man in the White House is just like that. He mouths the word "hope," with no context, expecting others to imagine what he might mean by it. So, we are supposed to be garnered into believing whatever we think he means.

As Dirty Harry termed it, the man is the biggest Hoax this country has ever seen.
