The Iranian hostage-takers didn't harm the hostages because they weren't sure we wouldn't smoke all of Tehran if they did so. They even let one hostage go when he developed a serious illness.
These guys, on the other hand, know to a certainty that Obumbo won't lift a finger no matter what they do. Kill the ambassador, kill a bunch of other Americans, burn the embassy itself, hoist their own flag over it, whatever. They know nothing will happen.
Obviously lots of other American embassies are in lots of other touchy locations. Obumbo is letting the word go out to the legions of nutjobs in all those places.
