The Obama administration is engulfed in a full-blown foreign policy crisis just two months before the presidential election with the two campaigns trading angry accusations over events in Libya, Egypt and Israel.
Footage of the body of Christopher Stevens, United States ambassador to Libya, slung over the back of a protester, was reminiscent of the 1993 'Black Hawk Down' incident in Somalia in 1993 when militia fighters lynched American aircrew in the streets of Mogadishu.
President Barack Obama's staff will also be mindful that a shadow was cast over Jimmy Carter's presidency by the Iranian hostage crisis after the US embassy in Tehran was stormed by Islamist extremists following the Iranian revolution.
A year after the 52 Americans were taken hostage, Carter lost the 1980 election. The hostages were released just as President Ronald Reagan, who defeated Carter, was sworn in.

Yeah, those attackers weren't smart enough to know that their actions jeopardized their keeping their Muslim brother in the White House for another four years.
Since the murdering scum charged in the face of live fire, it would seem that they knew the U.S. Marines would not shoot any of them...Wonder who told 'em...
This is a correct statement. What we need are punitive and retaliatory measures, that exact a degree of pain on the WHOLE REGION.
What we should do is cut off all aid to Egypt and Lybia today. We then produce a list of all other Islamic countries receiving American aid, and announce that any aid to those countries will be cut off as well, by Friday, if a public statement condemning attacks on American interests is not proffered by said country's leadership.
This means Jordan, this means Saudi Arabia, this means Iraq, also the Palestinians.
Since we are not currently sending aid to Iran, more sanctions should be announced as a result of this, if they don't publicly condemn the violence perpetrated upon us on Sept 11 in Libya and Egypt.
Begin moving ships toward the region. Today.
But then our leader is not on our side, he's on the side of the Islamists. So he won't do any these things.
Oft’ evil will shall evil mar.
1979 and 2012
I heard on the radio this morning that Ambassador Stevens, prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Libya, had been the US liason to the muslim brotherhood rebels. He was proud of being part of taking down the Khadafi regime. Seems that he had a hand in creating the monster, too. I am NOT saying he deserved what he got, but ironically, he helped create the situation that killed him.
There are reports Libyan security forces aided the flash mob in locating the diplomats. We should insist those security personnel be turned over to the US for trial. Never happen, but we hear that about American personnel all the time. We should turn their own crap back on them.
Next, we should look at where Libyan security forces are housed. Perhaps a strike against that installation in retaliation for their complicity would deliver a message.
I was also a college senior in 1981; Indiana University. I recall staying up and watching the returns in November 1980 as the Republicans swept away a bunch of old-guard liberals on Ronald Reagan’s coat tails. I also recall the hostages being released.
In my office, right now I am looking at my framed reproduction of the front page of the Bloomington Herald-Telephone from Tuesday, March 31, 1981. Two huge headlines:
“Hoosiers-NCAA Champs”
“Reagan Condition Excellent After Surgeons Remove Bullet”
Like minds and all. See my post #67. BTW, how’s Texas?
Were they told or just smart enough to figure out that weaklings knuckle under to the bully? Seems that someone has failed the test of leadership.
"Miss us, yet?"
Cletus is right. The “muslim street” will never love us, no matter how many apologies BO issues, no matter how many times he bows to Muslim potentates, no matter how often he disses Israel. Therefore, they must be taught to fear us, and to police themselves out of that fear for us. We can’t accept excuses like “it’s because of a few extremists,” or “it was a flash mob without real leaders.” If a group of protestors attacked a foreign embassy in this country, all necessary force would be expended to control the mob and protect the diplomats. Indifference on the part of the armed forces and the general population equals complicity with the violence. Massive retaliation, please.
I would be interested in learning what phrases they use.
To say that foggy bottom is dominated by those of far left wing political philosophies is an understatement. The interviewers are very good at weeding out any applicants who do not fit the profile of left-wing orthodoxy. Occasionally, during a GOP administration, they are directed to hire a few token conservatives in the George Will mold so as to improve their diversity.
‘Hawk Obama’ cannot be. He will lose the anti-war folks and he won’t pick up the warriors. He has to play out Jimmy Carter’s ‘let’s all just get along! Hey, that’s not nice’ scenario.
Terrible shame to see the chickens come home to roost. (Git the popcorn).
I’m not surprised at your experience. I got the same impression back in 1981, and chose to go to law school.
As for Ambassador Stevens, he was a graduate of Cal-Berkley and Hastings College of Law. He had the pedigree they are looking for.
Thousands of blacks can be slaughtered on the streets of Chicago, Philadelphia, Newark, Detroit and the MSM doesn't care.
But if ONE American is killed by a middle class white man - or one black by a middle class white man - all hell will break lose in the MSM. That's because the MSM hates white middle-aged, middle-class, conservative men. (the reason? The MSM is made up of liberal elite white men)
This is an Obama/Hillary Clinton mess...proof of what happens when folks with no inkling of the real world are in charge
Thank you Sir for your service...freedom isn't free
A gritty gut wrenching indictment of Obambi policies in 2 mins and 39 seconds
If Zero tries that I’m hoping some patriots in the upper echelons of the military step in and arrest him and the whole executive branch.
Man, I never thought I’d ever advocate a coup d’ etat, but there it is.
