The Republican party has many problems right now, but one of them is that they really haven't changed leadership since the disastrous 2007 and 2008 years :Boehner and McConnell and now Romney who is not that much different than Bush or McCain (he is probably more loyal to the party than McCain.) This is a big problem.
The other problem is that the R party is fractured and doesn't have a leader it trusts, where-as the liberals base of the Dem party trust and love Obama. They were starting to turn on him in 2009 and 2010 but Boehner taking over the House fixed that. So Democats unite and Republicans argue with one another. A strong winning trusted leader would unite Republicans (or even conservatives) as a team, and Rush is certainly not that person
We dont know how this election will turn out (unlike 2008 and 2010 which were easy to forcast) but Republicans are not doing very well considering the current climate.
Carter up Big on Reagan ...
Dukakis up 17 after his Convention.
The convention bounce will fade and then watch the LV polls...Romney will be looking good in the swing states and this recent Carteresque Mideast debacle may swing independents and Reagan Dems back hard to Romney.
