Actually, the weapons the MSGs used were part of the approved State Department weaponry. I loved the Uzis! I think they switched to the M9 because it was easier in terms of qualification and logisitics (the Marines were used to them). And yes, I've called in many to the embassy at zero-dark-thirty.

Warmest Regards.

The State Department never let us carry any weapons off the embassy, saying it was “incompatible with our diplomatic status.”. The most dangerous place I’d ever served at was Lagos, Nigeria, even worse than Saigon or Baghdad, as far as personal security goes. We weren’t permitted to leave Victoria Island where the embassy and quarters were located without an armed Nigerian security agent in the vehicle with us. Only times I was in Lagos proper were to and from the airport.
