BTW, this area was at the end of a runway used for the assembly of the troop carrying planes being ferried over to England for the D-Day Invasion ~ it was the FRONT LINE ITSELF!
The DC area had numerous airfields built just for that purpose ~ some a little more permanent than others, but tens of thousands of airmen and their crews came through here to go by bus over to Bolling Field to be greated by President Roosevelt, or Truman, or the Secretary of War, before going on to Europe.
A local historic society has been at work identifying all these runways ~ I have some memories of the planes flying into Bolling and then out over my folk's apartment up the hill on Portland Street.
