I remember when this happened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukio_Mishima the most recent (?) public self-knifing. By the way the guy who attempted (unsuccessfully) to behead Mishima went on to a successful career in Hollywood. Domo arigato, Mr. Miagi. Domo arigato ....

Mishima was a nutcase (and his writing is boring as all get out), but I think you’re wrong about who unsuccessfully tried to decapitate him. Masakatsu Morita failed in his attempt and committed seppuku himself, by earlier agreement another member of the Tatenokai, Hiroyasu Koga, finished the job on them both.

Hahaha...! Nah...!

But he WAS a celebrity —a whacko designer with technicolor dyed hair who...got into a physical altercation with a woman whom he almost beat to death —pretty unJapanese. They invited that whacko onto a lot of TV shows, later.

Wrong, it was Masakatsu Morita that attempted the beheading. He subsequently committed seppuku himself and was beheaded.

Kinda difficult to have a successful Hollywood career without a head.
