I believe he is not winning because he has failed to set the context for the election. I believe it the wrong approach to say that the contest is over jobs. I believe the contest is over the survival of the country. That means the survival of the country free of the specter we all know from The Grapes of Wrath.
All we hold dear will be destroyed if our fiscal house is not brought under control. Obama will wreck the country financially, legally, morally, and as a civil society. Obama has not failed because he is a nice guy who has been ill advised, Obama has failed because he is a radical redistributionist, a Marxist who wants to "transform" our system at any cost. He is an ideologue who believes in breaking as many eggs as necessary to make his omelette.
I know that Romney has been advised by his experts who are privy to very expensive data accrued from focus groups and insider polling which tell them that the election will be decided by independents and independents will decide against the candidate who causes discord.
One has only to look at recent polling numbers to see that that evidently is not the case. Obama has lied his way from beginning to end in this election and he has disparaged Romney with the most palpably absurd charges without any evident "blowback."
Yes, we know that Obama has been shielded from justifiable criticism by virtue of his skin color and we know that he has a lot of downfield blockers in the media. So Obama can get away with much that Romney should not dare. But Romney could have fielded an array of effective surrogates who could make the damning case against Obama.
Where are they?
You put your finger on why Romney can't touch on some issues (corruption, veiled past, unconstitutional actions, etc, etc.) because of a well-justified concern that he would be branded racist, birther, extremist, smear artist, etc. As for surrogates doing it for him, a few are doing it effectively such as John Sununu (and probably others), but you are right, there should be many more.
Mark Halperin of TIME and John Heilemann of New York Magazine made statements right after Clint Eastwood's speech at the GOP convention, to the effect that Romney's message and the GOP message won't get out because a partisan and committed media won't let it get out. Oh, various statements will be quoted ..... but as Halperin said, everything will be sliced, diced, spun, and reassembled so that the GOP message will be rendered incoherent.
They told that stuff to Charlie Rose on his show, right after Eastwood's speech. Eastwood had stung them, and Halperin was pointing out to Charlie that Eastwood's message wouldn't get out -- he was "timed out" by the MSM, which refused that night to carry anything but Romney's speech.
I think Clint's video going viral will help, but it's impossible to say how much -- you can just bet the 'RatRoots are chasing it through Cyberspace, trying to kill it.
Therefore, what you say is true, but not by any nonfeasance of the GOP ticket, but by the malicious interference of the LSM and the Regime (but I repeat myself).
Where are they?
Answer: They were killed by Political Correctness and Romney has been severely injured by it.
The republicans are like high class rich city kids who play by strict rules and have never learned to fight with those who don’t.
In all cases those who fight by the rules lose when fighting with those who don’t.
It’s a simple fact of life.
Where are they?
Making nice with that "enormous" voting block of disaffected dems and independents broadcasting the soothing message that Mitt can be their government sponsored hope and change.
