"Henry IV, 16th Century France"

Well, upon further review, it was the Hoover campaign of 1928, not FDR, that plagiarized Henry IV (thank you for the info, btw); so I'm just going to have to withdraw the remark completely.

crap.

Coolidge may also have lifted the expression but the evidence is thin ~ a speech or something ~

Glad this came up ~ Mexico just went through the gyrations of combating bird flu ~ they had to slaughter 11 million birds, they vaccinated 88 million, and they are preparing to vaccinate another 90 million.

Mexico has 112 million people ~ so that's 181 million birds for about 90 million IN Mexico and another 20 million IN the United States.

That means Mexico isn't quite up to where the US was when it comes to chickens in the 1930s!

Our politicians were promising a chicken in every pot ~ presumably one a week ~ and Mexico can give its people about one chicken a year ~ laying hens being in service for about 2 years with a good production record.

The result is Mexicans eat an awful lot of eggs, but few chickens. Other Central Americans have even fewer chickens.

We have a custom in Springfield VA ~ lots of Salvadorans around here ~ one night a week the men in a work group, or family, get together at a Colonel Sanders or Popeyes and EAT CHICKEN.

They will buy a bucket, eat it, buy another bucket, eat it and work from there into night when the store closes. All that's left when they are done is a little pile of white bones. Even the cartilege is gone ~ there are no grease residues, and no napkins are wasted ~ something gets on the fingers or the hand it gets eaten.

Thank God I live in a nation with spare chickens ~ with a veritable gusher of chickens ~
