Pennsylvania is not a deep blue state, you’re just wrong about that.
Think of it as “Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with Alabama in between”. :)
You are definitely right about the geography of PA and its voting tendencies (I used to live in rural PA).
However, on the aggregate, PA is a blue state in national elections. They haven’t given their electoral votes to a Republican since Bush 41 in the 80s.

Having spent much time in central PA (with an eye on moving there before too long), I would think of it more as having West Virginia or Kentucky in between .
Having written that, Pennsylvania may end up the heartbreaker for Romney this year. Just not enough folks in “The T” to overcome the dead weight of the masses on either end of the state.
Obama doesn't need to win the Alabama part. Democrats get Pennsylvania's electoral votes because they win Philadelphia and the collar counties in such overwhelming numbers that the rest of the state comes along as a consolation prize. I don't see that changing in November.
