White Protestants, your monopoly is over
CNN ^ | 9/8/2012 | Dean Obeidallah

Attention white Anglo-Saxon Protestants: Your days of running things are over. You have jumped the shark.

But there's no need to feel bad for WASPs.

They've had an amazing run. Every single president in our nation's history, except for John F. Kennedy -- a Catholic -- and Barack Obama, has been a white Protestant. Except for a handful of exceptions, for over 200 years the presidential nominees of both major political parties have been WASPs. WASPs had almost as many victories in a row as The Harlem Globetrotters.

But it's over. Look at this year's presidential tickets: A Mormon, an African-American, and two Catholics. Even some of the keynote speakers at the Democratic and Republican conventions were not WASPs. The GOP featured Italian-Irish Catholic Chris Christie and the Democrats tapped Latino-American, Julian Castro. Dean Obeidallah Dean Obeidallah

Times are so bleak for WASPs that there's not a single one on the Supreme Court. Likewise, in Congress, the percentage of Protestants fell from 74 percent in 1961 to a slim majority of 55 percent today. Neither the current Speaker of the House (John Boehner: Catholic) nor the Senate majority leader (Harry Reid: Mormon) is WASP.

I'm sincerely not gloating. And my jibes are in jest. But what I'm happy about is that our two major political parties are increasingly reflecting the new face of America. The demographics of our nation are changing and, by 2042, minorities are expected to become the majority in the U.S.

Objectively, the delegates at this year's Democratic convention were far more diverse. The Republican convention looked more like the early bird dinner crowd at The Cracker Barrel.

If you listen to the Neo Yankees on Free Republic no white poeple built or worked in the ante bellum south. Blacks did all the work, built every house, road, picked all crops etc. White people just layed around drinking mint julips and did nothing except operate a whip every now and then.

Why would someone look at people in such a way: members of this group or that group. It would never occur to me to divide people into categories like this.

It's the only way liberals can look at people. It is also why they accuse others of being racist and bigoted.

Their little minds cannot grasp the reality that people of the same skin color or religion can have different values, or that people of different skin color or religions can have shared values.

The liberal view is that racial diversity must be forced by government, rather than achieved by merit and qualifications.

I think you are discounting the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment. That, and William Penn’s influence pretty well defines the old character of the U.S.A.

A liberal, who’s living high on solar green stimulus monies, had the nerve to sit on my couch and declare that we don’t need any more old white men as POTUS.

Yes! Only a hate filled bigoted foul mouthed lying liberal would say such things. But since they are liberal they therefore mean well and it is okay.

I doubt they are gloating because Catholics, often almost identical to Protestants in their manners and morals, are having more success these days.

Likewise, Hispanics have a lot more in common with whites than blacks. While now, 70% or so vote Democrat, that affiliation will likely drop like a rock after a generation or two of integration, just like with other immigrants.

And Mormons are somehow different from Protestants in ways other than doctrinally? Oh, yeah, there’s been a lot of pitched battles between Mormons and protestants in the last 100 years.

Sorry, CNN. WASP is not a state of being, it is a state of mind, and doing quite well, thank you.

Attention white Anglo-Saxon Protestants: Your days of running things are over. You have jumped the shark.

Thanks Wikipedia. "Dean Obeidallah. A Palestinian American Italian comedian." Yes indeed!

I suppose this man might raise various persons blood pressure over this statement. Which is what he intended to do. I retained my calm on this lovely near fall morning up in Great Lakes country and marvelled at the truth of Orwell. Orwell held that persons can be so suborned, that they can be faced with outrage and feel a disconnect. Yes, if a so-called Wasp who had prominence, trumpeted the demise of Obama rule shortly, he would be flayed mercilessly for saying "Black is over", this in refering to November next; he would be flayed mercilessly. "Racist" would be the least of the epithets applied.

American humourist Kin Hubbard, (1868-1930) once said "It ain't no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be." One could apply this to the so-called Wasp. "It ain't a disgrace to be white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, but it might as well be". The book "Dreams From My Father" points to this kind of attitude. Yet some people ignore it.

Just Damn.

Whoops! my bad error. Sentence should read:

Yes, if a so-called Wasp who had prominence, trumpeted the demise of Obama rule shortly, he would be flayed mercilessly for saying "Black is over", this in referring to November next. "Racist" would be the least of the epithets applied.

Maybe the post-Christian WASPs need to be called WASLs (pronounced “wazzles”)—White Anglo-Saxon Liberals.

Also... for the record... I am not certain about Mormonism but Catholic or Protestant... we are all Christians IMHO. CHRIST is the way.

Most people are "religionists". They belong to a religion, but they aren't Christian. Christianity isn't a religion, it's a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as their Savior AND Lord. A Christian believes that Jesus's sacrifice on the cross is sufficient for the forgiveness of their sins. A Christian also puts his/her full trust in the Lord. A Christian knows that no amount of works or rituals or sacraments, etc. can earn their salvation. Only God, through the Holy Spirit saves you. However, a Christian desires to obey and serve the Lord at all time, not out of obligation but overwhelming gratitude.

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Matthew 7:14

I understand your point, but Mormonism does not derive from, nor does it claim to derive from, Protestant beliefs. It takes a vastly different route, deriving from its own special set of revelations via the Book of Mormon and other non-Biblical Scriptures.

Nor was Stanley Ann Dunham’s family Protestant. Her parents were skeptics, and she called herself a secular humanist.
