Hopefully 2012 will also happen and keep 1776 from being a waste of time. Agreed - it may seem to be semantics but the difference between citizen and subject is huge. This story is an illustrative example.

Then again, these are the same people who cowered and did nothing to stop the V2 rockets from scorching their land until America came along. Whatever the failings of today's Brits (and we Americans aren't what we used to be), the Brits of 1939-1945 were hardly cowering. They held the NAZI's by themselves for two years, and continued to fight a long and hard 7 years of war. Please refrain from attacks on the honorable dead.

You may want to read up on the Blitz, and The Battle of Britan before making such a sweeping generalization.

I think it is too late.
“stupid” and “stupidity” entered the English language in 1541. Since then, stupidity has taken place along with “fool,” “idiot,” “dumb,” “moron,” and related concepts as a pejorative appellation for human misdeeds, whether purposeful or accidental, due to absence of mental capacity.

Yeah, that is a good point.
But I was referring to a criminal conviction interfering with their emigration, it seems wrong to me since Australia was colonize by “transported” British criminals.

Every single individual in the government involved with this should be prosecuted and serve time in prison. No compromise.

Then again, these are the same people who cowered and did nothing to stop the V2 rockets from scorching their land until America came along. There wasn't much that you could do to stop the V2's--the Patriot missile was decades away in the future. All you could do was to try to locate and attack the launch sites, which the Allies did as best they could.

In any case: the V2 program was an expensive failure and a misallocation of materials that actually served to shorten the war in the Allies favour. As to accuracy, the V2 had a circular error probability (CEP), or target area, of 25 miles, making it essentially useless except as a terror weapon. By contrast, the Minuteman III ICBM's CEP is 200 yards.

What good is going to Australia? I had the same question. They should head for Texas or Arizona.

same people who cowered and did nothing to stop the V2 rockets from scorching their land until America came along. The first V-2 came in Sept 1944. By then the Brits were 'cowering' with the rest of the Allies in continental Europe. Get a clue and a grip.

I'm coming late to this thread, but I recall that when this story broke several days ago that there were folks posting from the UK saying "this is perfectly normal procedure, nothing to worry about, these people are in good hands, etc." Now we find out, as many of us suspected from the start, that they were being subjected to a merciless grilling that lasted for days and only escaped being charged with murder by the skin of their teeth.
I don't see those posters on this thread. Funny that.

Spouses have legal privilege. In the USA perhaps. In the UK it seems that only yobs and muzzies have any privileges under the law. Storm a farmhouse? Here's an ASBO. Don't forget to text your counselor once a week. Now run along, we have to deal with the evil homeowner and his horrible gun.
