I don’t believe Obama is a Muslim. I believe he grew up as a far left atheist then upon arriving in Chicago knew he had to connect with the black community so joined Wright’s church which also conveniently jived with his political ideology - marxism.
Agree. His mother was an atheist. He was raised an atheist.
Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ subscribed to black liberation theology (i.e., marxism) and he was at home there.
At the same time, I would contend that a.) he remains an atheist but b.) with distinct Muslim sympathies.

Concur. He is an atheist who is not above using religion for political purposes. Doesn’t really matter if the religion is Islam or Christianity—its whatever works at the moment.
You’re correct: Obama is not a native Chicagoan and to advance his career and political aspirations he needed to make connections in a hurry. The Trinity United Church of Christ was not especially close to Obama’s Hyde Park neighborhood (where Bill Ayers also lived), but it was a black mega-church with a huge congregation. As Reverend Wright has acknowledged the Obamas were never really “church people.” Barack and Michelle were opportunists.
