Just like a dynamic piece of software. Very little code, lots of configurable metadata, endless possibilities.
I've seen a theory that postulates that the geneome hoards characteristics that were once useful, just in case they might be useful again.
We'll see if they flesh that theory out any better.
It is an amazing universe.
