Tanya Tucker - Delta Dawn

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky

She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her "baby"
All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy
'Cause she walks around town with a suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark-haired man

In her younger days they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
And promised her he'd take her for his bride

Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say he was a-meeting you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky

Sammy Davis Jnr "Mr Bojangles"

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you
In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
The old soft shoe

He jumped so high
He jumped so high
Then he'd lightly touched down

Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Dance

I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was
Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
As he spoke right out

He talked of life
He talked of life
He lightly slapped his leg instead

He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick
Across the cell
He grabbed his pants for a better stance
He jumped so high
He clicked his heels

He let go a laugh
He let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around

Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Dance

We danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs
Throughout the south
We spoke in tears of fifteen years
How his dog and him
They travelled about

His dog up and died
He up and died
After twenty years he still grieves

They said I dance now at every chance and honky tonks
For drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
Cause I drinks a bit

He shook his head and as he shook his head
I heard someone ask please

Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Dance

Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles
Mr Bojangles

I remember singing that song when I was a child. It really brought back memories!

An impressive array of Schubert's works! Here's one of my favorites. I can't recall how many times I've sung this one - a staple of the Tenor repertoire rendered by one of the greatest tenors of the last century!

That tells a sad story. The singer stands under window, and at the end she doesn’t listen to his enreaties and come down.

Sad indeed! Schubert touches on many emotions with his numerous songs - the sad ones and the terrifying songs are the ones that stick with me - he could evoke a tone of anxiety like no one else I have heard.

Tartarus would be a pagan analogy to hell. Some kind of hell is a logical thing for anyone believing in trans-human deity or deities to expect to exist. Christians differed from ancient pagans, not so much in being theists, but in the kind of deity they put their faith in.

Anyhow, Goethe, the author of the poem used as lyrics, simply liked the macabre. Tartarus or hell, he wouldn’t have cared about that — just about which one could yield the most colorful stories.

Oh yes! Well-known to me, but I haven't sung that one. I always thought it was better suited to a Baritone voice. And I can't think of a better Baritone to perform it than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau!
