It’s also the absurd situation where too many jobs require a bachelor’s degree that DONT need one.

Pay tens of thousands of dollars on classes just to obtain a 10/hr position that has nothing to do with any of them.

People, especially people that graduated back when schools didnt suck, and didnt require you to go to college for the basics, cant even apply because they worked their entire adult life!

All thy have left is flipping burgers!

I hears ya (says the guy who worked his entire life and didn’t go to college). It is possible in most organizations to waive the college requirement when hiring. Unfortunately, most managers are lazy and just circular file all resumes that don’t list a degree. I don’t. We just hired two American HS grads to do database work, because I tested them and they are darned good at it.

I’ve said for a couple decades that we are headed for a two-tiered economy. Those doing the best will have a high level of saleable skill and the larger portion won’t. I expect it’s going to shake out about 15 / 85 %. Most liberal arts degrees will qualify the holder for a McJob so they shouldn’t waste the money. The days are over when a tiedyed punk could lazyass his way thru four years of daycare and expect to be hired by Microsoft on his way out. One year learning computer aided manufacturing would have been more useful. But that is work and it is that level of commitment to effort that is going to separate the population into two groups. It’s going to take a couple generations to turn that around. Some of the sliders will probably just die off.

As an experienced career counselor and recruiter, I would advise individuals in that position to obtain what would otherwise be considered a worthless degree. Schools that will grant anyone an unaccredited bachelors degree for a couple of hundred dollars (or less, sometimes even free) abound on the Internet. If the only reason one needs a degree is for one’s resume, that’s probably the way to go. Be sure not to use it for a profession that actually requires a real, accredited degree and you should be fine.
Employers don’t always do a thorough vetting, and even if they do, give them the number to call at the school office.
