That quote is from Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia, under a section of “manners.”

I quoted that work in my upcoming book, because it shows Jefferson’s soul, his belief in God, and his belief that we will be judged for our acts, good and bad.

Visiting the Jefferson Memorial was a life affirming event for me.

Reading the words on the walls there led me to discover a significantly different Jefferson than the one typically presented by both atheists and preachers.

“I HAVE SWORN UPON THE ALTAR OF GOD ETERNAL HOSTILITY TO EVERY FORM OF TYRANNY OVER THE MIND OF MAN”

The Virginia Act for Religious Freedom — a key understanding the intent implicit within the 1st Amendment.
