Conservative scholar Diniseh D'Souza's film has shocked industry prognosticators by earning an estimated $20 million to date, more than five times what the second-highest documentary this year, "Bully," earned.
While pundits and critics are divided over whether "2016: Obama's America" is a sobering documentary examining "the most mysterious U.S. president in modern history" or an 87-minute attack ad, there's no debating that the film is a box office phenomenon.
Taking a page from his own book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," conservative scholar Diniseh D'Souza's film has shocked industry prognosticators by earning an estimated $20 million to date, more than five times what the second-highest documentary this year, "Bully," earned. With virtually no promotional budget, the film has expanded in a little over a month from one theater in Houston to 1747 screens this weekend.
"People see the success and they think we have the marketing budget of 'Dark Knight Rises,' we probably don't even have the catering budget of the 'Dark Knight,'" co-director John Sullivan, who helped craft the promotional plan, told the News.
So they had to rely on the choir preaching to an even bigger choir. Sullivan says ahead of the film's mid-July opening at the Edward Houston Marq'E Stadium 23 & IMAX, local right-wing radio host Michael Berry championed the film with an all-out publicity blitz on his show.
Roughly 200 movie-goers were turned away from the sold out shows that weekend, a theater manager told the Hollywood Reporter.
From there, the film opened in three additional Houston-area theaters, then a handful of other cities in the reddest of states. It helped that by the time it jumped onto 1,071 screens last weekend, it didn't have to go toe-to-toe with Batman or Iron Man.

Run, don’t walk.
If you read Roots of Obamas Rage, you can stroll though. The book was better.
I agree but went to see it mainly to support it. I did enjoy it and many of the people I went with learned a lot.
It will become the most watched theatrical release of a documentary ever.
Make more conservative documentaries with the proceeds!
The AWARD comes at around Midnight on November 6th when Zero concedes the election! That’s the only award that means anything.
This is Michele Bachmann's district - hard core conservative - and when they movie ended, no one spoke. It is as if we were afraid to speak for fear of retribution.
I hope to cost them as many of those hollow point 22's as I can.
Dude!
Took our two youngest to see this today and they liked it.
Went to see film with my daughter...something my son should see, but that will never happen. Theater 3/4 full. Everyone applauded at the end.
I would encourage every conservative to go and see this movie so it will stay in theatres as long as possible.
It will out draw Fahrenheit 911.
Not in a million years, F911 made over 125 million. We are at 20 million with most conservatives seeing the film already. It does not matter if it is number one. It is number 2 of political documentaries. It MIGHT beat “W” at 54 million dollars later in the year.
There were some very interesting parts that I thought surprising. I was impressed with the movie. It was very well done.
So it is the number one conservative political documentary?
This means that the new media is gaining on the MSM, then.
I would encourage every conservative to go and see this movie AND bring teenagers!!!!
Where do the most ardent fans of the film live? The five states with the strongest box office receipts are California, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Ohio. The best-selling cities so far are Lima, Ohio; San Angelo and Tyler-Longview, Texas; Harrisonburg, Va., and Grand Junction-Montrose, Colo.
Ok whatever makes you happy.....a bit of a stretch but I have heard more exaggerations before.
I think it will beat An Inconvenient Truth. Heh.
Well it couldn’t be because there is a shortage of editors, Hell on FR alone at least half of all FReepers believe themselves qualified to be professional editors.
We just saw it. Very well done. Although not much in it was new to me, I am a political junkie and daily FR frequenter.
Much of the information in it will be new to the casual follower of politics, even if they are conservative.
I doubt liberals will go to see it, but independents might.
Two positive things I hope occur are that 1) conservatives who do see it are more determined that Obama has to be defeated which means they donate to Romney and/or volunteer to help his campaign and 2) they become even more angry at the media who did nothing to research and report Obama’s history.
