A growing list of Republicans and conservatives are calling for longtime Republican adviser Karl Rove to step away from GOP campaign efforts after the strategist jested that he might have to murder Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo.
William Murray, who heads the Government is Not God Political Action Committee and chairs the Religious Freedom Coalition, said today that the comment was so distasteful as to shame the entire Republican Party.
Congressman Akin made a misstatement on the subject of rape and conception for which he apologized, he said. Apparently Karl Rove believes the apology is not enough and that Akin should pay with his life. Jokes about murder are not jokes when it comes to politicians where the risks of assassination are real.
Conservative icon and founder of the Eagle Forum Phyllis Schlafly echoed the calls for Roves resignation.
Karl Rove has made himself toxic to Republicans by his incredibly offensive and dangerous statement suggesting the murder of Congressman Todd Akin of Missouri, Schlafly said in a statement. Any candidate or network who hires Rove will now be tarnished with this most malicious remark ever made in Republican politics.
The Associated Press reported today that Rove did apologize
But Schlafly says its not enough.
At the very least Rove should make a public apology. Rove has been calling on Todd Akin ...but the one who should resign because he made an embarrassing, malicious and downright stupid remark is Karl Rove.
Joseph Farah, founder and CEO at WND.com, has said Roves got to go.
Just out of sheer decency standards, Fox News should drop him as a contributor, he said. Sean Hannity should stop pumping up this mean-spirited political operative as the architect.
Rove has self-destructed, he said.

Absolutely. My point exactly. Couldn’t agree more.
The best and most effective discipline is always to let natural consequences occur. Parents need to know that.
Works in the real world, too.
We’ve become such politically-correct pansies that society intervenes by giving the errant a pass or, conversely, lowering the boom prematurely.
If we still had a solid common ethos, the approval or disapproval of a prudent and sober society would keep things in check, shame the shameful.
We’ve lost that. Too bad.
Rove has a national audience thanks to people like Sean Hannity. When he says something stupid, it's not only news, it can affect votes. You and I don't have that kind of audience.
In a just political world, this would lead to a broader discussion of why social conservatives are no longer welcome at the GOP table.
YES!
Rove spends his TV time to bash Republican conservatives, he is not on our side.
Karl is obviously quite ill and needs to take some of his own medicine. A little rest from his analyst spot on Fox News will do him [and us] some good.
Akin most certainly did not misspeak. He was misinformed possibly, but he certainly said what he intended to say.
Perhaps Rove will be more circumspect now. I personally am ok with Atkins staying in the race. But that does not mean somehow Rove should not be allowed to have his opinion.
Akin was not joking, he was quasi-mistaken.
Rove on the other hand was serious about killing Akin’s political career by illustrating his point with a jest about actually killing him.
I’ve no doubt which is more despicable.
he is free to have an opinion, we are free to call him an idiot
Are you trying to redirect people from reading the thread? Rove? Is that you?
Would that be the same free speech that Rove sought to take from Akin???
Rove is trying to assure that a dumb bimbo leftist wins by pulling funding for the Republican nominee. Obviously, he’d rather have Democrats maintain control of the Senate than have another conservative senator.
Rove doesn’t have 300 million. He’s simply a money collector from donors. American politics will not stop when Rove passes from the scene. He’s simply one more guy with his hand out.
Akin, on the other hand, is a conservative running for a slot in a state that has regularly voted conservative.
The polls I’ve been seeing say he is recovering from a political witchhunt led by his own teammates.
And then there’s Scott Brown who openly admitted that he’s pro abortion in the midst of this as the GOP waves the pro life banner.
If Rove’s opinions get stupid enough, he’ll lose his Fox job. That’s a business decision. It’s OK with me if he speaks his mind and FReepers don’t agree with him. That’s the beauty of the first amendment.
I have no problem with free expression, and really have no use for party-line hacks. I’d rather hear a heartfelt opinion, even if I disagree with it, than scripted spin.
Maybe I’m just in the decreasing minority of voters who don’t mind thinking.
Scott Brown is a liberal RINO who happens to have had the spawn of satan as an opponent
Yep, Rove and the RINO’s attack, ridicule and try to get funding shut down to CONSERVATIVES. This isn’t the first instance, it’s been happening for a while.
But Abortion is still not OK according to the so called GOP platform.
The Whole party has become a joke at this point.
Rove didn’t try to take free speech from Akin. In Akin’s world, in Rove’s world, in my world, Akin can say whatever he wants.
But when he’s running for Senate and he says something blatantly offensive and stupid, as he did, he may well cost the GOP control of the Senate.
It’s not about his free speech, which he can exercise till the day he dies, but rather about his character, his ability to step out of the race for the good of the country he serves.
The next President will almost certainly nominate multiple Supreme Court justices, and control of the Senate is crucial to making sure they’re not liberal wackos.
The next President must have a majority in the Senate to repeal Obamacare.
The Akin issue isn’t about his right to say stupid stuff, but rather about his ego damaging the future of this nation.
