The former Navy SEAL who just wrote a book about the Osama bin Laden raid is in violation of the non-disclosure agreements he signed, the Department of Defense General Counsel said Thursday.
General Counsel Jeh Johnson wrote in a letter to "MarkOwen,"the authors pen name, that by selling his book he aggravates the violation.
"We've got to get serious about leaks ofclassifiedinformation,"a senior Defense official told NBC News. "As unpalatable as it may seem to go after this Navy SEAL, if we do nothing there is no deterrence, nothing to prevent others from doing the same."

Welcome to Orwell's world.
When Obama leaked a mangled version of the same classified information, killing 22 SEALs and several other Americans, where was the Pentagon outrage? The threatened prosecution is political, sleazy, and exactly what I expect from Obama. The community organizer disgusts me.
Sorry, I give this guy no break for his politics. If he published details that were secret and subject to a non-disclosure then he is a traitor and should be prosecuted as such. If he did not, then the Pentagon should stay out of it.
I knew that was going to happen. I am surprised it was not done earlier. He better hope he is squeaky clean on this book and nothing in the book is classified (even a small fact) or he will be charged. They are out for blood so I hope he has everything in line.
This ought to get BO some votes with the military minded in this country. LOL! Is he an idiot or what?
“We’ve got to get serious about leaks of classified information,” a senior Defense official told NBC News.
Coming from the Obama White House - which has leaked like a sieve for years - this is nothing but a tasteless joke, and the official making this assertion is little better than a clown.
It couldn’t possibly be more obvious that the only reason they’d go after this guy is because he makes the Moron in Chief in the White House look bad.
If, by contrast, the book made Hussein look good, the author could be giving away defense secrets, intelligence secrets, and the formula for Coca Cola, and no one would say a thing - except maybe Coca Cola.
B Hussein Obama compromised our intell and assets with his big bragging mouth. Twerp is a coward and a weasel of the worst order. Dumb jackasses still follow him! God help them please.
As one who was a part of the OPSEC support apparatus, I can say there are ways to tell the story of what happened without discussing confidential or classified details of the tactics and intelligence once the operation has been completed. I can’t wait to receive the book to find out for myself and to make an educated decision on his liability.
When we got all of the stories of the no-brainer decision to strike, what the subsequent stories of how things went down, and how those were fashioned and released to make the Kenyan look good, they opened the door on the declassification part of the story.
Do we really need to answer that?
The Pentagon/Military has been politicized like this country has never seen and that ain't a good thing!
Naturally, this will simply have an affect of making more people aware of the book and more inclined (curious) to purchase it; I know it has me.
One can not diss a thin-skinned, narcissistic, puerile, man-child DIKTATOR such as Barry Hussein without incurring the wrath of this Occupier in Chief.
Hey Obama: suck it up and STFU; your days are numbered: Jan 20, 2013.
I wish the Seal the best but with this administration I put nothing past them. Look how they arrested the one military person for a facebook post. They are dangerous as heck.
He’s done some damage to zer0. Every drop helps. There was no firefight, zer0 lied about that.
Lets see what 60 min. does
He may see this as outing Obama, but disclosing operational scenarios and methods will only get other SEALs killed.
He took an oath to keep this stuff secret. He’s breaking that oath.
I understand, but this Seal is a big boy and he fully understands the landscape in which he did this. These guys are more than resilient and always have alternate paths to follow on any mission, and with God at his side, he is on another one now.
I am all about OPSEC, but coming from this administration-the charge is a joke! On the other hand, DOD is probably helping book sales.
I agree with you conservaterian. If the non-disclosure agreements are still binding then he is in breach of contract. If he knowingly disclosed secrets then he is a traitor.
Eventually we will get the real facts of this case.
Have you read the book yet?
Are you familiar with the rules and procedures of the handling of classified, secret and top secret information and how it is declassified?
Do you know what precise piece of information was compromised by this book?
If not, then how in the H do you know if he violated his oath?
Yeah, start looking for the "beat up a fat kid when he was seven" stories from the Sulzberger media.
“We’ve got to get serious about leaks of classified information,”a senior Defense official told NBC News. “
This is sarcasm right?
