Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign toasted its top donors Wednesday aboard a 150-foot yacht flying the flag of the Cayman Islands.
The floating party, hosted by a Florida developer on his yacht "Cracker Bay," was one of a dozen exclusive events meant to nurture those who have raised more than $1 million for Romney's bid.
"I think it's ironic they do this aboard a yacht that doesn't even pay its taxes," said a woman who lives aboard a much smaller boat moored at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina.
Romney's Cayman-based investments have come under fire during the campaign.
The event, attended by no more than 50 people, along with Romney relatives, including older brother Scott, appeared on no public calendars. ABC News obtained a schedule of the Romney campaign's "Victory Council" and waited dockside to speak with members.
"It was a really nice event. These are good supporters," said billionaire Wilbur Ross, an energy industry executive.

Nice job Toyko Rose.
It's one reason that there has only been one cruise ship built in the last 50 years that sails under an American flag, and it's called the MS Pride of America by Norwegian - it's so unusual to be US flagged that they made a huge deal about it.
So success is something to be looked upon negatively?
“Said a woman who lives on a much smaller boat”. Yes, a mere 100 ft yacht!. BTW anything longer than 84 feet is considered a ship.
What "foreign donor"?? I don't see any donors but American ones mentioned in the article.
When was the last time we elected a president that wasn’t a millionaire? Do you know?
Penis envy except with boats...
Lurch has one and owes back taxes for years.
And guess who one of those reporters is? None other than Brian Ross, the crack ABC reporter who, along with George Stepanopoulos, blamed the Aurora, Colorado shooting on James Holmes of the Tea Party.
Anybody surprised they got this wrong as well?
Many large yachts are foreign registered. Why? To bypass US Coast Guard safety inspections which are as ridiculous as the government itself.
This doesn’t mean to say that they are not safe or properly equipped.
Hey Nana . . . you didn’t build that yacht.
most sane people flag their boats (unless it is a tiny pleasure boat) outside the USA in over to avoid the tax liability. If anything it demonstrates the need for tax reform.
No, the YACHT is registered off shore. Chill.
“Toyko Rose”
Is that an official name from the Republican code book?
The yacht is flying the flag of Bermuda, not the Caymans.
Frankly I don’t care where the host of the party registers his yacht. As to being politically dumb, I’d rather Mitt be exactly who he is than walk around on eggshells trying to guess what’s going to offend the left.
Plenty of Americans document their yachts where the yachts are based and primarily used. Yes, some of those bases are tax friendly. Ask John Kerry. Ask Al Gore.
geez, another evil capitalist who got rich by betraying our country.... by raising money from tax free municipal bonds to build the world's largest retirement villages. Surely govt could have taxed him 90% and “invested” the money more wisely... maybe in govt housing for seniors built by an obama bundler?? D.OH! (sarc)
Do ya think municipalities issue tax-free bonds with investors like Gary Morse because those those homes and retirement centers add to the quality of life for Seniors.... and to the economy of the states where those communities are located?
Kick yer Granny out though, if you think she is being exploited to live in a 2 bedroom rancher on a golf course
“Many large yachts are foreign registered”
At one time without Liberia the shipping industry would have disappeared. Lately I haven’t seen many with Liberia registry loading grain/oil here.
I remember a time when people here investigated the lies of Dan Rather. Are we now so quick to accept ABC's version of facts?
