Because no nation founded on the principle that all men are created equal could continue to exist when the law put in place to ensure that principle was used to deny it. That glaring omission had to be corrected, even if it threatened the existence of the nation itself.
The right side won, the wrong side lost.
Your side had the better generalship and the better soldiery; the north had the better cause. And God was watching. The end.
No. The end has not been written. We see the continuance of the destruction of the United STATES of American in its relentless march toward the United STATE of America thanks entirely to Abe Lincoln and northern Federalist. Your point about the “threatened existence” of the nation makes no sense, given that the nation — as it was founded — was destroyed in 1865.
Another fact that fails is your “continue to exist” comment. The U.S. would have continued on, only without the southern states.
I come from the perspective that slavery was an abominable institution and would have ended eventually anyway, as it did in ever other western, civilized nation. Keeping in mind that the war was NOT fought to free slaves — and that by forcing “free” men of the South to be slaves to a union — there is NO moral high ground to be claimed...unless you believe there is nobility in freeing black people while enslaving white people.
This has been kicked around a million times on FR, but one simple fact NEVER changes...the path to a repressive central government began with the WBTS...whether you believe that war was fought for the right reasons or not. To champion that “victory” is to champion slavery by an all powerful federal government. Period.
So much for being on the “right” side.
