Mitt Romneys eldest sister, who has backed prominent Democrats for office and is in Tampa showing support for her brother, had some reassuring words Wednesday for women concerned about the Republican Partys hard line on abortion.
Mitt Romney would never make abortions illegal as president, Jane Romney said when National Journal asked her about the subject after a Women for Mitt event. "Hes not going to be touching any of that, she said. Its not his focus.
Democratic warnings that abortion rights are under threat are an ungrounded fear tactic, Jane Romney said. Thats what women are afraid of, but thats conjured, she said. Personally, I dont think abortion should be used as a football in the political arena.
Democrats have not lacked fodder for their charges. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who is running for the Senate, are among the many Republicans who oppose abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. And the Republican platform adopted this week explicitly calls for a constitutional ban on abortion, saying that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It does not specify any exceptions.
But as Jane Romney put it, Mitts much more in the middle when it comes to abortion.
Mitt Romney has said he supports legal abortion in cases of rape and incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger. As for the fate of abortion rights, Recognize this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court," he said in an interview with CBS News this week. "The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts. It's been settled for some time in the courts."
Jane Romney said she believes life is sacred and suggested those seeking abortion should be required to undergo counseling. But she also said that abortion should absolutely be safe and legal. Every woman needs to be left to make her own choice, she said.
A ban on abortion is never going to happen under a Romney administration, Jane Romney said. Women would take to the streets. Women fought for our choice, were not going to go back."
Little is known about Jane Romney, who said she is an actress in Los Angeles, and she is not a presence on the campaign trail. Unlike Ann Romney and the Romney sons, she has not been deployed as a surrogate. According to a Romney biography by Ronald B. Scott, a journalist for Time in the 1970s and a distant cousin of the candidate, Jane Romney supported California Democratic candidates like Sen. Barbara Boxer and Gov. Jerry Brown.
Jane Romney said that her brother can empathize and understand women from all walks of life. She said that he was there for her when she went through a divorce and raised four teenagers on her own. Mitt and Ann are the right people at the right time for this country, she said.
The federal government has NO BUSINESS getting involved in the abortion debate, anyhow.
This is an issue that should be handled at the state level. Let the states ban abortion if their residents so desire.
Or don’t you good conservatives believe in state’s rights, the Tenth Amendment, and Federalism?
No President can ban abortion. Talk about a keen sense for the obvious.
Please tell me one Republican, Rino or not, who would, or COULD, ban abortion. It is a losing game.
You have been a Romney devotee for years, you were calling Mitt a conservative, years ago.
You aren’t voting for the guy out of desperation, you like his politics.
The real remedy conservatives should be looking to is to pass the constitutional amendment on abortion called for in the party's platform as well as a marriage amendment. Waiting for a court to randomly have the right 9 people on it to decide things for us has failed. It's time to bypass the courts and the presidency and get these issues resolved through the will of the people with constitutional amendments. It's exactly what many states have done when their judges have gone rogue and passed same-sex marriage. And it's what we should do nationally. We can debate the contents and wording of the amendments but it is at the very least the only way to definitively overturn Roe vs. Wade.
Did you only start using this account in 2009?

It is sure easy to see all the romneybot, fake pro-lifers.
They are all latching onto whether a president can “ban” abortion, rather than to the relevance of this thread.
Yes ansel12, he is 10 times the man your guy will ever be. This is my 4th Presidential election on FreeRepublic and to have you trolls jump on every thread promoting that communist and his team of liars makes me angry but also builds my resolve to fight even harder.
I came to Drudge on January 17, 1998 when the Clinton scandal hit and that is where I found the link to FreeRepublic and something called Lucianne.com. I got the courage to actually post something that July and have had a severe addiction ever since. I actually think the Class of 99 and up is better than the Class of 98 (although I would never admit it publicly)because shortly after I signed up there was a holy war between us and Drudge and he took down the link. That meant those that came on after were probably referrals from current members and a higher quality member. Those that came on like me, through Drudge were just very lucky and may never have found it otherwise so tell your friends.
Well you don’t hide your slavish love for the guy, since your posts only go back to 2009, I can’t tell how long you have been worshipful of the man and his liberalism.
Why don’t you tell us how much you get paid to shill for your man Obama? Do you get paid based on the number of unique responses? Are you making money off me right now? I know you guys in Naperville, Illinois are doing the best that you can but do you really expect to convince us conservatives to vote for Obama because Romney will nominate liberal Judges? Is the first team on vacation this week or on their way to North Carolina? We should let Holder replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg instead of Romney, really? Tell them you need better material than that to fool the folks on FreeRepublic. That crap is lame.
What happened to your old posting history?
Nice thought. That is also a fantasy.
During the R primary debates I got peed off every-time one of them promised a constitutional amendment. I am tired of fantasy promises that they are not serious about.
Even worse, that RINO Graham-nesty purposefully got on the Sunday shows and cynically proposed a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship for illegals, when that could be done by congress. He did it on purpose to give Dems a weapon against it.
I have no idea, I don’t do opposition research. I don’t know how to look that stuff up. How do you do it? Is there something you would like to know? I will tell you. You can be part of the problem or you could be part of the solution. I don’t have time to watch the world crumble, I am 58. When I was young I had worked for people like McGovern, Carter and Kennedy. I felt totally hopeless at 26 in 1980, things were a lot like they are today. I left the democrats and voted for a republican for the first time, Ronald Reagan and I had hope. This November my son turns 26 and he is where I was. Romney was my sixth choice this year. You said something about desperation, maybe you are right. I have no idea who you are, if you are not a troll I apologize and ask you to forgive me and please give us a chance for success, a chance for our young people to succeed and start families. Move the turret twords the enemy and lets get to work.
And I'm thinking that you, Tom, are an arrogant wannabe politician who loves to disparage other people who aren't on your bandwagon.
I first read the 9th Amendment in 8th grade, and can quote most of the Bill of Rights from memory. So take your high horse back to the stable.
Admit it. In 1973, WE LOST. SCOTUS granted FedGov a new power to protect a fake "right" to abortion.
So, what are you going to do about that? The SCOTUS can't do anything. There's not even a TEST CASE to overturn Roe v. Wade. And there isn't a prospect of getting any of the Circuit Courts to take one anytime soon.
So, you fight abortion where you can: use the POWERS OF THE STATES to our advantage. At least in the states, we are running abortion clinics out of town on a rail by regulating their shoddy medical practices, putting limits on when an abortion takes place, and putting a STOP to the evil practice of live-birth infanticide, aka "partial-birth abortion."
And "all or nothing" jerks like you would say that none of that matters. Ask the people whose lives were saved whether it matters.
Your "all or nothing" position is unreasonable and will be unsuccessful, and you know it. Attacking on multiple fronts, incrementally, is the ONLY WAY abortion will be beat back in this country.
Your way has been tried for forty years. And they’re still killing the babies.
It’s time for a principled approach.
Good luck with your pro-choice democrat candidate.
Come talk to me if and when you’re ready to put conservatism into practice once again.
All or nothing, to the death, huh? Your side is winning, and you don't care unless it's done your way.
The number of abortion providers declined by 11% between 1996 and 2000. During BILL CLINTON's 2nd term! By your lights, there should have been no action on abortion during a Dem administration, because Clintoon didn't fix it!
As of June 2012, we are down to only 659 surgical abortion clinics in the WHOLE COUNTRY! There are more 7-11's in CA area than that! A number of states, including Kentucky, no longer even HAVE an abortion clinic.
But those lives saved don't matter, do they, Mr. All or Nothing?
Yes, Roe v Wade is still stare decisis, but 27 states have banned live-birth infanticide. How many thousands of lives have been saved?
Texas just banned the funding of "Planned Parenthood", and a federal appeals court upheld it. How many clinics will fail because of the loss of Texas funding? How many lives will be saved?
But no, Tom Hoefling says, let them babies burn in the incinerator, because Roe v Wade has not been overturned or a Constitutional Amendment banning abortion has not been ratified.
Your position is immoral and impotent, and you know it.
Says a man who is supporting a candidate who made tens of millions from the business of burning the bodies of murdered babies in incinerators.
