Mitt Romneys eldest sister, who has backed prominent Democrats for office and is in Tampa showing support for her brother, had some reassuring words Wednesday for women concerned about the Republican Partys hard line on abortion.
Mitt Romney would never make abortions illegal as president, Jane Romney said when National Journal asked her about the subject after a Women for Mitt event. "Hes not going to be touching any of that, she said. Its not his focus.
Democratic warnings that abortion rights are under threat are an ungrounded fear tactic, Jane Romney said. Thats what women are afraid of, but thats conjured, she said. Personally, I dont think abortion should be used as a football in the political arena.
Democrats have not lacked fodder for their charges. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., who is running for the Senate, are among the many Republicans who oppose abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. And the Republican platform adopted this week explicitly calls for a constitutional ban on abortion, saying that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It does not specify any exceptions.
But as Jane Romney put it, Mitts much more in the middle when it comes to abortion.
Mitt Romney has said he supports legal abortion in cases of rape and incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger. As for the fate of abortion rights, Recognize this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court," he said in an interview with CBS News this week. "The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts. It's been settled for some time in the courts."
Jane Romney said she believes life is sacred and suggested those seeking abortion should be required to undergo counseling. But she also said that abortion should absolutely be safe and legal. Every woman needs to be left to make her own choice, she said.
A ban on abortion is never going to happen under a Romney administration, Jane Romney said. Women would take to the streets. Women fought for our choice, were not going to go back."
Little is known about Jane Romney, who said she is an actress in Los Angeles, and she is not a presence on the campaign trail. Unlike Ann Romney and the Romney sons, she has not been deployed as a surrogate. According to a Romney biography by Ronald B. Scott, a journalist for Time in the 1970s and a distant cousin of the candidate, Jane Romney supported California Democratic candidates like Sen. Barbara Boxer and Gov. Jerry Brown.
Jane Romney said that her brother can empathize and understand women from all walks of life. She said that he was there for her when she went through a divorce and raised four teenagers on her own. Mitt and Ann are the right people at the right time for this country, she said.
Do you think Romney will pass pro-choice policies?
I don’t know if he will pass pro-choice policies but I do know he won’t put in conservatives on the Supreme Court.
I get so tired of hearing this “every woman should be able to make choices” B.S. If a woman doesn’t want to get pregnant, she should not engage in sexual activity at all, take the pill or have a hysterectomy.
Just think if we could have fast forwarded 50 years. Stanley Ann Dunham, the leftist that she was, would undoubtedly have had an abortion instead of marrying an already married Kenyan exchange student...so there are cases where we all can agree that abortion would have been the preferable outcome.
Right - abortion is feminism’s symbol of women having power over men, but the insidious part is that the “need” for abortion requires women to be out of control and evading responsibility for their own actions - something men are routinely accused of.
If both men and women would own up to the responsibility of being adults, then ... well, actually I guess 2/3rds of the Democrat agenda goes away.
Spot on!
Exactly! I have no children. But I did not marry until I was 43. I could have had children if I chose. I did not use the pill either. I used self control and good sense. I knew when I could get pregnant. I was not a virgin when I married but I was not a whore either.
Abortion is a consideration in nominations ... not the only consideration.
Roberts betrayed us, but gave no reason to think he would prior to the knife-in-the-back. There’s no accounting for cowardice.

He can't. But guess what...no other GOP nominee would have either. Bush didn't. You can't replace the supreme court.
Politicians will never get rid of abortion. Only revival will.

Another HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS??? I didn't know Mitt had a crackpot for a sister...
Let's hear it from a Bishop ~ is Romney telling you like it is, or is he just another Jack Mormon who might be up to just about anything.
Is moral confusion a Mormon thing, a Romney thing, or just Jane's thing? If women should have the right to kill their unborn, how sacred is it?
Well, President Obama could, at least if he were so inclined. He would just make up an Executive Order banning it, and one of his Czars would send out policies for the states to follow. Those who disagreed would be taxed into oblivion. End of story.
But, no, a Republican could not do that.
A president can't but Romney will be attacked here anyway by the usual suspect.
Even the GOP platform acknowledges this simple truth by calling for "life amendment" to the constitution and presidents have no formal role in the amendment process.
Yes, you have that absolutely right, people like muawiyah have one goal here, to make sure that Obama is President when sickly Ruth Bader Ginsburg who will be between 80 and 84 years old, leaves the court knowing that if Romney and Judge Bork pick her replacement that young constitutional conservative will join Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Anthony Alito, and John G. Roberts as the crucial 6th vote. That is what all this trollism is all about and never forget it. They will be in attack mode (from the right) every single day to keep abortion safe, legal and affordable.
If Romney is elected he will almost assuredly get to replace Scalia and Kennedy with LIBERALS. The court will then be liberal for a couple of generations.
As governor he chose zero pro-life judges, zero-conservatives, and only 25% of them were even registered republican.
Bishop Romney has said that he and his family became pro-abortion in 1963, and that the Mormon religion is not pro-life.
I believe that Mitt has gone back to his pro-abortion position this week.
Mitt’s mother was also a Hollywood actress.
