When I was a little boy, too young to read we lived in Panama City. I recall seeing a picture in the Panama City News Herald which showed soldiers in the streets burning tables etc.

I asked my Mother what it was and she said it was “marshall law in Phenix City, Alabama.” Around 20 years later I was working in South Alabama with some of the Federal agents who used to work in Phenix City. They had some great war storied to tell.

Of course Phenix City was taken over by National Guard under the Governor who ordered the martial law.

Ah yes, Phenix City....

Where Patton allegedly drove a tank through the bars and “cat houses” because the vice lords of Phenix City were preying on Patton’s troops.
