I agree on the factor of destructive hysteria.

Akin’s remarks were ambiguous and definitely warranted clarification. The only reasonable conclusion that could be made from his controversial remarks is: abortion is not acceptable in the case where rape is not a factor.

They also weren't the summary sound byte that's being attributed to him by Orwell's sheep.
