Typically republican - Determined to alienate their conservative base and snatch drefeat from the jaws of victory.
I believe many at the top of the party would rather lose the presidential election than lose their own power and influence.

Yep and they leaned it from Mitty's papa who stomped offstage in 1964 and actively worked to destroy Goldwater and for 50 years the moderates have pointed to the Goldwater loss that they engineered as why we must be more moderate.
Moderates are lying, manipulative, bottom feeding scum who will happily lose an election just to say "we told you so". Conservatives have repeatedly compromised for moderate candidates only to get sold down the river when a conservative is on the line.

Has to be the case.
They are making this attempt to consolidate power despite the anger it will generate within the conservative base at a time when our country is on the brink of disaster.
Unpatriotic, selfish fools.

How very true.
Like they did four years ago.
McCain paraphrased: Nothing to fear from Obama as a President
He threw the election to Obama on that day a few weeks before the election.
