I’ve wondered myself if she was set up to be a “martyr,” a useful idiot designed to drum up hatred toward Israel in the U.S. for killing an allegedly-innocent American. Except it only worked with leftists who hate Israel anyway. Everyone else just started telling St. Pancake jokes.
I’m considering the same thing about her. But keep in mind she volunteered for the job. All depends on the movie she was running in her head.
