Leftists attacked the apple industry once before- some group hired Fenton Communications to trash the Washington state apple industry with a scare over the use of a chemical- the Great Alar Scare.
On the other hand, apples are already "poisonous" since the seeds naturally contain a tiny amount of arsenic. You'd have to eat and chew up a lot of seeds for that to be a problem, though.
