Akin’s Support Craters in Missouri
Weekly Standard ^ | 8/26/12 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 08/26/2012 3:00:52 PM PDT by rhema

Support for Republican Todd Akin’s decision to stay in the Missouri Senate race has cratered and so has his favorability. Those findings come from two new polls conducted after Akin created a firestorm with his comment about “legitimate rape.”

Republicans, by a 47 percent to 37 percent margin, think he should drop out of the Senate contest against Democrat Claire McCaskill, and self-described Akin supporters believe the same by 50 percent to 34 percent, according to a Mason-Dixon survey. Only Democrats, sensing he’s likely to lose, want him to remain a candidate, 47 percent to 37 percent.

And in a poll for conservative groups, only 24 percent of Missouri voters looked favorably on Akin and 54 percent said they regard him unfavorably.

Before his rape comment two weeks ago, Akin had a solid lead over McCaskill. Republicans counted Missouri as a likely victory that would help them take control of the Senate. Now their chances look shaky.

While Romney did well in the poll for conservative organizations, leading President Obama in Missouri by 54 percent to 41 percent, Akin trailed McCaskill, 44 percent to 36 percent. A few weeks ago, he led by five percentage points. He was ahead by 11 percentage points among independents but now is 17 points behind. Independents, by 57 percent to 25 percent, want him to drop out.

Akin, however, has vowed to stay in the race. His freefall in the two polls will make that decision more difficult to defend.

Akin imagines himself on a mission from God. Unfortunately, he isn`t going anywhere.

Akin meets with the Central Committee and strikes a deal. He agrees to withdraw if he can name his replacement, who would most assuredly be pro-life and conservative. If the replacement is someone who has a better shot at winning (that would be a couple million people in Missouri), they should strike the deal.

That would be a very good deal!

“Akin will own that defeat and the national results of it.”

Its already national and its not going away. The MSM/Dems will be using it for years.

They now have a face to connect to the image of pro-life conservatives. A bigoted, uneducated, neanderthalic, misogynistic, white male.

I asked you a question in good faith and that is the kind of crap answer I get? Thanks.

“Annavile”? I looked it up and there is one person in the U.S., in Florida, named Anna Vile. How is she relevant?

Because the laws of the state of Missouri don't permit it

Quit spreading this nonsense. You know better. He can resign, pray for the court to accept his withdrawal, pay for the cost of reprinting ballots, and be gone.

I also understand that this is not your preferred course of action, you are firmly with the Kamikaze squad of Akin loyalists. Rock on, dude, but quit lying, and enjoy the post concession party.

“Would that also be at the point of a sword???”

Do you have any idea what the percentage there is of even getting a shot at being a US senator?
A lot of people would jump at the chance.

“Akin will own that defeat and the national results of it.”

Agree with what you say.

What I meant by "national results of his defeat" is the possibility that his losing that seat could mean our loss of Majority status in the Senate and giving Harry Reid another 2 years of reign.

I stopped paying attention to Uncle when he failed to provide a link to prove his statement that other conservatives were offered the opportunity to replace Akin but they refused.

He’s toast, flatlined, deceased, a former candidate. He’s joined the choir celestial.

Brilliant! But, you left out: He has ceased to be, he is a former parrot.

During the Second World War, Eighth Air Force bombers flew in tight “combat box” formations with hundreds of B-17’s or B-24’s in them, These formations were so designed that every gun on every plane covered every other one in the formation in every direction. This formation integrity was essential in maintaining safety of the combat wing beyond escort fighter range. This formation also ensured a tight bomb pattern on the target.

If a plane was hit by fighter fire or flack and lost an engine or two and was unable to keep up with the formation it became a straggler, and had to be sacrificed for the safety of the group and the effectiveness of the strike.

The straggler was usually pounced by Luftwaffe fighters as soon as it fell behind the protection of the massed guns of the formation and shot to pieces.....a bomber carrying ten men being cut to pieces in full view of their comrades, friends, and fellow flyers......who could do nothing but continue to fly on in formation to the target.

Akin has become that straggler, and the GOP must continue on flying towards the target in formation.

Would you trade a certain Congressional seat that you don't even have to campaign for for a chance at a Senate seat against a seasoned pro who is going to fight you tooth and nail for every vote.

Your answer here: ________________ .

That's easy for you to say. It's not your Congressional seat.

Face it -- there are just no real easy options.

Sarah Steelman, supported by Palin.

No wonder Akin narrowly won - Missouri is an open primary state.

Did it ever occur to you that the party regulars don’t want him to resign because among other things there is no replacement available that could mount a challenge.

I stopped paying attention to Uncle

He's fighting the good fight. If he's not on the Akin payroll, he should be, he's the best friend that Akin has right now. Unfortunately, it's a losing position. Akin can't win and if he continues, we will see the Conservatives serve up yet another unearned victory to the evil Democrats. Go Uncle Chip, McCaskill and Akin love you so.

To join “the club?” As a conservative in California — no. As a conservative in New York — no. As a conservative in Texas — yes. As a conservative in Missouri against McCasKILL -— absolutely.

And who would these party regulars be? Missouri types, I presume. Did some bizarre accident befall Brunner and Steelman. Did Talent get an unlisted number? Oh, tell us great Suwamee.

I like Akin's voting record. If I thought he had a good shot I'd be pushing for him all the way but the only shot he's got is the self-inflicted one in his foot and like pResident Obama he and his supporters now blame everybody else for the comment that came out of his mouth and forced the electorate and conservatives to distance themselves from the man.

I hate to say it but at this point the biggest danger to the conservative movement is Akin himself. The sooner he steps aside the better off America will be. The clock is ticking. Soon he will own the defeat even if at some point he does move off the stage and give another conservative a chance.

Akin will own the defeat of even his replacement.
