It's odd how a single Congressional race, unfamiliar to most of the country until the past several days, has become such a litmus test. A verbal gaffe that amounts to an unfortunate choice of words, by the Republican candidate who was by all accounts leading the race up to and beyond that point, ignited a firestorm that was more massive and enduring among Republicans than anyone else, leading to a decline in polling among ... Republicans, due to their own criticisms and attempts to get him to leave the race.

It's so colossally stupid, I've begun to suspect some sort of attempted manipulation of the conservative base. If I hear anything remotely resembling a peanut gallery starting up about supporting Romney like they supported Akin, it'll become more than suspicion. What would establishment insiders have to lose, they hated all three candidates in that race, floated blast-from-the-past Danforth as recently as March to replace any one of them, Akin, Steelman or Brunner.

Heads We win, tails you lose. Either getting rid of a social conservative thorn in their sides or manipulating the conservative base into something more than lukewarm suspicion regarding Mitt Romney. Who, by the way, uncharacteristically jumped into the fray very early and who made some intemperate remarks.

Well, I don’t see a conspiracy here, but I see your point. I also find it interesting that a guy whose primary campaign was financially supported by Claire McCaskill gains such ardent support here at FR. Whatever her reasons, shouldn’t that make him a bit suspect as a candidate?

Having said that, I agree it was quite overblown. I enjoy debating it here, but this is just our little corner of the internet.

As for the party, they’ve had their say, and now they ought to shut up. He said he’s staying in, and there is nothing to gain by trying to force him out. The Democrats appear to be gearing up to massively overplay their hand, lining up pro-abortion speakers to headline their convention. That won’t help them. Abortion doesn’t win votes.
