The election is in November. Akin needs to go after McCaskill's voting record. She voted for Obamacare and does not want it repealed. In a referendum--not a poll--71% of Missouri voters wanted no part of Obamacare. Will the voters reelect McCaskill to keep Obamacare in place or choose Akin, the guy who will vote to repeal it? And then there are other real issues like the economy, the debt and deficit, unemployment, etc.

We will see with time whether Missouri voters consider a verbal gaffe, which has no effect on their personal lives and interests, is more important than the actual record of McCaskill who supports Obama's policies that are inimical to their personal interests. A month from now, reality may sink in, the current media hysteria not withstanding.

With Akin on the ballot, this won't be the question. Women and Independents will vote for McCaskill rather than for the guy who stuck his foot in his mouth. Elections are often about emotional decisions and Akin made up quite a few emotional minds. Reason, logic, other issues no longer matter and that's the point.

One showing of a 15 second commercial showing a mushroom cloud scared the American public and there wasn't anything that logic or rhetoric could do to save Barry Goldwater. It's just the way these things work.
