Frederic Chopin proposed marriage to Maria. Her mother, a figure of the minor Polish nobility in exile, approved somewhat. Maria was only 16, and as luck would have it, Freds tuberculosis suddenly flared up. The marriage was postponed, and their engagement remained a secret.
From 1835 came a pair of nocturnes. The first is deliciously sad and nostalgic.
