After days of ignoring Republican pleas to abandon his U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin today received an even more damning message: A new Rasmussen poll shows that Akin, who held a tidy lead before making his controversial comments about rape and pregnancy, is now down 10 percentage points (48-38 percent) to incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
Never fazed, the Akin campaign shot back with an unlikely proposal.
The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is, Akin spokesman Perry Akin said in a statement. If she cant break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.
McCaskill, whose political career might well have been saved by Akins moment of madness, went online to cast doubt on the validity of the survey.
Rasmussen poll made me laugh out loud, she tweeted. If anyone believes that, I just turned 29. Sneaky stuff.
McCaskill then linked to a story from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claiming Rasmussen, with its ties to high-powered Republican operatives like Karl Rove, had intentionally stretched the spread in an effort to push Akin out of the race.
The final deadline for Akin to withdraw is Sept. 25. After that his name cannot be replaced on the ballot. But there is no indication hes even considering it.
Today, he reported on his Facebook page, Thousands and thousands of people have stepped up today and helped us raise over $100,000 in donations as small as $3. The message is loud and clear
the people of Missouri believe they should pick candidates, not party bosses or Washington elites.

I hope the message will not be lost on those that care to read it but I have my worries for the future of our country.
Really? You were offended by what he said?
there are good conservatives and there are intelligent conservatives and there are conservatives with cross over appeal. He won’t appeal beyond the trailer parks
3 dollars to this guy from a Democrat is 3 bucks zero won’t get.
I fail to see a problem with that.
Fixed it for ya.
You are not the brightest blub on the tree and would not know a RINO if it horned you in the a$$.
i guess you think he didn’t need to apologize.
about 10% of the population. thats a winning coalition
I didn’t see that poll yet. Where’d ya get it?
Not to me.
Politicians who I enthusiastically support *must* have:
Now I'll agree that *all* politicians stick their foot in their mouth once in awhile.
But in Akin's case, he shoved BOTH feet in his mouth, they exploded, and they're still stuck in there and on fire.
And no matter how much you try to take the finger of blame away from Akin and point it to the drive-bys, to other lefties, to "Stupid Republicans," and last but not least, to the exponentially increasing number of who you tar as "so-called conservatives" like Rush and Hannity and Coulter and every active or retired Missouri GOP office-holder and a plurality (and likely majority) of your fellow Freepers, well ...... it just ain't working. Akin scr***d the pooch all on his own.
"keep on attacking Akin until the election"
Bogus. Straw man. How many conservatives would do that? They asked him to step down before this week's deadline. Now they're asking him to step down ASAP. If he's still on the ballot after 9/25, he literally can NOT step down any more, and so conservatives will support him as best we can, even though his odds of winning will likely STILL be the same odds as a snowball in Liberal Nirvana.
With a 97.5% rating from the American Conservative Union. Meanwhile, I'm sure you're going to tell us that Mitt Romney is going to be the most conservative President since Reagan.
do you agree with what he said?
Romney?
Yep, but he’s been like a one man wrecking for the left, single-handedly handing the seat to McCaskill and changing the national focus from the economy/Medicare to “legitimate rape” and “the woman’s body has ways to shut that whole thing down.”
Mitt Romney..Conservative? Of course not..but if Akin loses we ALL lose, especially if we don’t gain more seats in the Senate. I hope that somehow by some miracle Akin can win but if he actually thinks that being down 10 when he was up 11 is a good thing he’s kidding himself
Yet, no doubt, you're fine voting for a man like Romney who has a more liberal record than Bill Clinton that has proven he'll do and say anything to get elected.
Being liberal, no problem for you. Being unprincipled, no problem for you. Being a near 100% conservative and making a gaffe, you deem that unacceptable.
Just thought a little bit ago about the major battle we won as conservatives oh so long ago. Jack Danforth defended a colleague and friend 20 years ago against a Democrat juggernaut. That man was Clarence Thomas and as I remember the Repubs gave their all defending him. It paid off and was a victory for us. GHWB, the President even stood firm. Mitt, Reince, Scott Brown and the others pooped in the nest. I am not excusing the Aiken comment but it could be a sign of things to come from the E.
