The deadline for getting a third-party candidate on the ballot is past. The only way to promote an alternate candidate while Akin’s name remains on the ballot would be as a write-in. The only name with any chance at that would be Kit Bond, but even that is a longshot.

TP still should have a candidate ready, as an alternative to the GOPe candidate, in case Akin and Huckabee wing can be reasoned with that he has no chance of winning and that by stepping down sooner, the GOPe will not replace him with an “establishment” candidate, and that he will do himself, his family and his political/earning viability if he does the right thing now.
I think they might prefer that to the “Karl Rove candidate.”
