The "legitimate rape" could have been apologized for as a poor choice of words and as a slip of the tongue, however when you insinuate that women have a magic vagina fairy that prevents them from becoming pregnant, there's no coming back from that level of stupidity. I was under the impression that as there are conditions conducive to conception, the opposite must also be true.
Then maybe I'm criminally stupid as well.

Getting pregnant has a lot of variables that have to be “just right.”
On any random day, it is highly unlikely that any woman would get pregnant.
Just about anyone who has gone through the process knows that.
But his wording made him sound ignorant, and that is dangerous in this political climate.

There's literally dozens of articles featuring quotes from doctors, OB/GYN's, professors of gynecology, of all political stripes, even Christian doctors who are saying that Akin's comments were possibly the stupidest thing they've ever heard.
There is no medical/biological backing for his comments, he made the same mistake many pro-lifers do by buying into the writings of Willke or some other quack doctor who made various statements that were never scientifically backed.
I think many people are underestimating the ridiculousness of what Akin said, especially the latter part of "the woman's body has a way to shut that whole thing down."
