McCaskill picked the opponent from the nominees facing her whose voting record most closely represented the righ-wing conservative republicans, people like you and I. In her opinion, the further "right" the candidate, the greater the chances she has to overcome him. Given the environment in Missouri these days, she didn't really have a snowball's chance against any of them, so this became her hail-Mary attempt at picking what she feels is an "extreme" candidate. It just so happens that we on FR as well as the grass roots across America like extremely conservative candidates. I sincerely hope her plan backfires as I will enjoy watching the fireworks that ensue in the democrat camp.

I sincerely hope her plan backfires It seems to be working very well for her so far. McCaskill knew what she was doing when she spent $1.5 million to get Akin as her opponent. Her plan backfires only if Akin withdraws.
