Illegal immigrants could receive more than $7 billion this year in federal tax credits, according to one estimate, thanks to a loophole in the law that allows people not authorized to work to reap the government payments with no questions asked.
Sen. Jeff Sessions' office calculated that, based on recent trends, illegal immigrants could receive roughly $7.4 billion through a provision known as the Additional Child Tax Credit. That's more than quadruple what the payout was four years ago, but the payments have been steadily increasing over the past decade.
Though illegal immigrants are prohibited from receiving similar tax credits, a quirk in the law allows them to qualify for the child tax credit. And it's a "refundable" credit, meaning recipients can reap the money -- with average checks totaling about $1,800 -- even if they've paid no taxes.
An aide to Sessions, R-Ala., the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, said the issue is a "serious matter that deserves attention" and another sign of how "Washington is disconnected from reality."
Illegal immigrants can qualify because even people not authorized to work in the U.S. are...

It’s stimulating the economy ...
This is one of the reasons you see on every street corner in the ‘hood starting on Jan 15th - - a tax prep outfit.
Between the “earned income credit” and these child credits, there is a huge amount of money given out.

It is hard for me to blame the illegals for taking the money if we are dumb enough to give it away.
This is a matter which needs to be corrected NOW!!!
We in the defense realm are chewing our nails wondering if sequestration is going to hit or not. Americans everywhere are wondering if they’re going to have a job next month or not. Everyone else is wondering when the economy is going to crash and burn.
WTF are these people getting ANYTHING from our government???
I feel I’m living in some twilight zone anymore.

Thanks Hunton Peck.
I’d believe $70B.
On one of the judge shows on television, on AA disclosed that his cousin would let people file for her kids tax ‘child credits’ as favors.
This is a scam and is simply another link in the big chain of reparations. This loophole could be closed overnight.
I’ll have to bookmark that for later, having just eaten dinner and wanting to keep it down. (Thanks for the warning)
Soon the Political Class won't even need the Votes of Americans to get their power in Washington.
Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about undocumented immigrants' ability to benefit from tax credits. I appreciate the time you took to write, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.
Please know that the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-193) established that, except for a small number of emergency services, undocumented immigrants are ineligible to receive federal public benefits, including welfare and health services.
While they are not eligible for federal benefits, a large number of undocumented immigrants still pay taxes. According to an April 2011 report by the Immigration Policy Center, households headed by undocumented immigrants paid $11.2 billion in state and local taxes in 2010. California alone received more than 2.7 billion dollars in tax revenue from undocumented immigrants.
At the same time, I recognize that undocumented immigrants are able to claim the additional child tax credit. As you note, the Inspector General for Tax Administration at the U.S. Department of the Treasury found that, in 2010, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) distributed $4.2 billion in additional child tax credits to individuals not authorized to work in the United States.
I believe this complicated situation only underscores the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Reforms should be sensible and fair, meet the needs of families and workers, provide effective enforcement and security at the borders, improve immigrant detentions, and offer a pathway to earned citizenship that requires undocumented immigrants to pay taxes and fines, pass background checks, and learn English.
Again, thank you for your letter. Be assured that I will keep your views in mind should the Senate consider related legislation. If you have any additional comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.

In my line of work I see lots of tax returns of Hispanics and blacks.....this is an epedimic that the general public really doesn’t know about....and the government has been turning a blind eye for years. I see tax returns that are so blatantly fraudulent its not even funny any more....listing nephews, nieces, people in Mexico, dogs, etc....I saw a return the other day where a Hispanic got a $5000 “earned income tax credit” on $19,000 in income with no taxes paid.....he listed something like 8 dependents.
People from Mexico have created a fortune 500 industry of fraud in the U.S. It’s pays big and our government just winks and nods.

Most illegals came here for benefits....not to work. That “hard working” illegal is a lie.

Many get this 5-6 times, by filing under 5-6 different names.
One in california was caught. He filed 22 times. Another in Texas did it 14 times.
You could stop it tomorrow by prosecuting a dozen high-profile cases of multiple abuse in the border states.
