Another Missouri Republican consultant suggests that Representative Jo Ann Emerson, the Republican who has represented Missouris eighth district since 1996, could be a top contender to replace Todd Akin if he quits. Her name has been making the rounds among party insiders, thanks in part to the fact that shes currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri. Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith used to be her chief-of-staff.
UPDATE: A colleague points out that Emerson is a member of the moderate-leaning Republican Main Street partnership, and generally less rightward than the three Akin, Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner who ran in the primary. Emersons American Conservative Union ranking for 2011 was 56, and for 2010 88; Akins ratings, in contrast, were 91.67 and 100 in those years respectively.
What are the polls looking like regarding this race?
Is there a poll out since Akin said he is remaining in the race? I still think Akin will withdraw. Most people can’t stand up to “Saint” “Know It All” Danforth et al.
First I’ve ever heard that “Kit” Bond is “conservative.” I don’t think he is; certainly his colleague Danforth is not.
I have no knowledge of Wagner but know Emerson's past statements and voting record would lose the conservative vote across MO. JoAnn's district might appreciate her "moderate" votes and comments but that won't get her far across the State.
As for Kit, I think most voters think he's past tense.
I’d rather it be someone who actually ran in the primary, Steelman or Brunner. But really, a turd would be a better candidate than Akin at this point.
True... because his political career is now over.
Any change to the ballot at this point requires judicial approval; also, the petitioner must pay for the replacement ballots.
That was after the asinine "forcible rape" clause was removed.
There was one poll taken the day after the story hit, showing that he'd gone from a 10-point lead to a virtual tie. To all indications, it's gotten worse since then, but I don't have hard numbers.
It’s over!
BREAKING: McCaskill up 10 pts over Akin in Missouri Poll

The advantage with this pick is that Akin could run for Congress in her district. The old man has to be paid off somehow.
I’ll gladly vote for Wagner but the idea of dragging out Kit Bond doesn’t sit well with me. As I recall, he wasn’t very conservative toward the end. I remember writing him a lot! Lol! Also, it seems there was a scandal brewing, maybe his connection to Abramson? Not sure, I’ll have to look it up?
Unfortunately, Akin seems to have convinced himself that he's the victim of a liberal media hit job (as other Republicans have been), and thus doesn't accept that this mess is his own fault.
It was a poorly worded expression of two things, 1) that physically traumatic rape (as opposed to voluntary sex which may under some conditiions be considered rape as a legal fiction) is less likely to produce a child than voluntary sex, and 2) that even if a child is conceived under such adverse conditions, they are still a person with a right to live.
As to the first point, he offered his belief that there are physiological reasons why one might have a reduced expectation of pregnancy where severe trauma is present, and there is an ongoing medical question here whether this is true. Therefore his statement on this is not on its face wrong, nor is it a reflection of personal insensitivity toward women. It is a statement of personal belief regarding human reproductive physiology which is the subject of current medical research and therefore, at minimum, scientifically plausible.
As to the second point, a human child at any age, even 5 seconds, is still living human being. It eats, it grows, it becomes more complete and capable of human living with every passing moment. It, no, he or she, has a God-given right to continue on that path of life, and to take that life, no matter how conceived, is unjustified homicide, aka murder. This is nothing other than standard prolife belief, and if this is the core belief to which you object, then you are objecting to the core belief of myself and probably most of the prolife movement. If I have misunderstood you, please accept my apology in advance.
“shes currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri”.
That should make voters very enthusiastic. Nothing like a lifetime pol to breed interest. I can’t speak for Missouri or Akin, but in my state I disagree with Parties and their backroom deals preempting the right of voters to pick candidates, but that’s just me as I’m not as enamored or trusting of Parties and politicians as the voters.
Missouri law says S-A-R-A-H S-T-E-E-L-M-A-N is not E-L-E-G-I-B-L-E.
T-O-O B-A-D, she must have had something on the ball if Gov. Palin not only endorsed her, but went there to help her out.
S-A-R-A-H S-T-E-E-L-M-A-N
Missouri law says S-A-R-A-H S-T-E-E-L-M-A-N is not E-L-E-G-I-B-L-E.

Y-O-U mispelled E-L-I-G-I-B-L-E. And, despite your fondest wishes, Sarah Steelman most definitely W-O-U-L-D be eligible to be the replacement for Akin under Missouri law once he withdraws.
