There have definitely been some Demon-rat machinations in this race, from Claire McKaskill’s campaign actually bankrolling some “pro”-Akin ads, to the manipulated PPP poll that showed him ahead by oversampling Rs.
However, I think Akin is a naive dupe, not a Dem ringer.
