Sarah Palin endorses third-party run if Akin won’t drop out
The Washington Examiner ^ | August 22, 2012 | Joel Gehrke

Posted on 08/22/2012 12:08:00 AM PDT by Publius804

Sarah Palin endorsed a third-party candidacy against Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., if he persists in his refusal to drop out of the general election campaign after making startling comments about rape and abortion.

“We’ve got to take back the Senate and Missouri is a must-win state,” Palin told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “The way we do that is to have someone like Sarah Steelman be able to run — even if it’s as a third-party candidate — to be able to run and help us take this back.” Palin endorsed Steelman in the primary, which was regarded as showdown for the privilege of challenging the deeply-unpopular Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.

The former Alaska governor reiterated her support for a third-party run when considering how conservatives should respond if Akin does not drop out before the state prints the ballots for the general election.

“Maybe it is a third-party run of Sarah Steelman — that I could get behind,” she said. “Granted, ‘the status quo has got to go’ [Steelman's campaign motto] would be an odd name for a third party, but we’ll coin it, we’ll adopt it, we’ll run with it if that’s what it takes in order to get a common sense, constitutional, happens-to-be-pro-life woman in Missouri to clean up this mess that has been created and at the same time take back the Senate.”

This may be the only way to salvage the seat. Akin is making life very difficult, he hurts the party and the pro-life cause.

What are the specific statutes in as far as getting a third-party candidate on the ballot. It would seem to me that since Akin has until Sept. 25 to drop out and the costs of changing the ballot laid on the party/Akin, then that must mean that the ballot is open for changes until that date. BUT there may have been a deadline for a third-party candidate to have filed with the proper amount of signatures. Any clues out there?

Can you say New York 23?

I don’t mind sacrificing a congressman, but the Senate is too close and too important. Can’t support Sarah on this.

I do not really know, and could easily stand corrected. But, I think Steelman is prohibited from a third-party run under Missouri’s “sore party” loser statute.

I saw Sarah Palin on Greta's show Tuesday night. Palin was VERY ticked off about Akin remaining in the race. Her words were terse, and I don't think she smiled at all during the entire interview. Very unusual for a typical Sarah Palin-Greta Van Sustern interview...

This poster despises Palin. It’s into derangement status.

This is gotten so out of hand due to all of the people in the media pulling the voter apart. It could have worked out. Now, it's beyond all complexity and getting frustrating. So many people have cast so much on the guy, I don't feel comfortable in doing that to anyone. I think the party could have handled this much better. He just does not believe in abortion- some people are like that (even in rape cases vs. supporting/agreeing that the person decide what to do so he's a hot potato to both sides. The left, I think, would die (as Cher says-suicide) if he were elected!!! He stands for everything that live to fight against. Shame this is happening over stupid comments since he is pro life.

I saw her, as well, and your assessment is right on!

If he doesn’t go to court and drop out, she is all in for a third party run with Steelman.

Must see tee vee!

How so? She’s endorsed many men.

This time, she was right in endorsing Steelman.

He has handled himself terribly. Akin in fact DAMAGES the prolife cause not helps it. He is such a selfish SOB he would rather take everyone down with him than take one for the team. His comments we inexcusable and moronic. Akin is an embarrassment and should retire and take a biology course or two.

I gave Akin the benefit of the doubt until I listened to him speak.

Every time he was asked if he would drop out for the good of the country he diverted the issue and went into how wonderful America is that this country has never forced itself on its neighbors and we rebuild the nations we defeat and our Constitution is the oldest one in the world.

He used the liberal tactic to divert the question.

That’s not all. Unrelated to his verbal blunder that got him in this mess in the first place, I noted something VERY BAD. He’s unstable and claims that he thinks he’s God’s gift to America. I noted (after the fact) that this man is a very bad political candidate, a very bad choice and will likely lose and concede with the faith that all is well because the defeat is in God’s hands and God has other better plans for America.

Another thing I noticed. Akin’s supporters (outside of his state) are the same republicans that have been running around with their “Nobody But My Candidate” philosophy.

The Akin supporters are the same ones that would prefer 4 more years of Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi than to see their candidate NOT in the race. So, they could care less if we are defeated in 2012 (even if their candidate Akin owns the defeat). They will divert THAT conversation and say: “See? We told you so. Romney should have never been the nominee. Romney LOST it or poor Akin.”

Akin and those who stand behind him have hurt (and most likely will continue to hurt) the pro-life and overall Conservative movement in this nation. That’s sad because I fear that an INCREASED number children will be murdered BECAUSE of Akin and those who supported him than would have been killed if he had just dropped out and put life above his ambitions.

Yes, in God’s eyes, those people are just as responsable as the doctor with the vacuum hose. They’ll try to tell St. Peter that they are innocent by pulling out their Republican Registration Card and cry out at the entrance of Heaven “I AM AMERICAN!”.

I never gave the man my financial support. My hands and conscience are clean. I feel sorry for those unborn who will now have to pay for this damage done by Akin and his blind supporters.

He is a very nice guy, and his politics are correct.

But, to say that legitimate rape doesn’t result in pregnancy is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

He messed up...BIG time. The fact that he doesn’t “get” that an apology doesn’t help tells me that, either, he’s in it for himself, or he’s clueless.

BTW, what’s the difference between legitimate rape, and illegitimate rape?
